Some people become part of an organization’s story simply by showing up year after year — and Allan Baird is certainly one of those people.

For many years, Allan has made the journey from Nova Scotia to join us at our conference, bringing with him industry news, years of knowledge and experience, and always a story or two to share along the way. But more than that, Allan has become a valued friend, mentor and familiar face to so many within the OASIS community.

His continued support, generosity and willingness to share his knowledge have meant a great deal to us over the years. It’s people like Allan who help make our industry community so special.

Ellen and her family had the pleasure of meeting up with Kayla Carter of Carter's Septic Tank Services for dinner at The Sandbar, overlooking the beautiful Shediac Bay from the historic Pointe-du-Chêne Wharf. It was wonderful to catch up, enjoy some incredible seafood, and take in the stunning waterfront views.

The 𝐑𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐭 𝐍𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding dedication to the industry while serving as strong advocates for the OASIS membership and community.

Over the past several years, this year’s recipient has played a pivotal role in strengthening OASIS through industry leadership, government relations, and collaboration with key stakeholders. Their deep understanding of government processes, industry operations, and regulatory frameworks has helped position OASIS as a respected and influential voice within the sector.

From contributing extensively to the MOL Working Group reviewing portable washrooms and cleanup facilities, to representing OASIS during the Coroner’s Review process, their efforts have helped shape meaningful industry recommendations and future training initiatives for members, municipalities, and organizations operating in public facilities.

🌿 Landscaping Around Your Septic System: What Every Homeowner Should Know 🌿

A beautiful yard and a healthy septic system can go hand in hand — as long as you landscape wisely! Here are a few important tips to help protect your system and avoid costly repairs:

✅ Keep trees and water-loving plants at least 25 feet away from your septic tank and drain field to prevent root damage.

✅ Avoid planting vegetable gardens near septic areas due to contamination risks.

✅ Be careful when installing fences — posts should be placed shallowly to avoid damaging underground components.

✅ Never drive, park, or place heavy structures like fire pits, patios, gazebos, or stone walkways over your septic system. Excess weight can compact soil and damage pipes.

✅ Keep septic tank lids accessible for regular inspections and pump-outs — don’t build or plant permanently over them.

𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Regulation 347 under the Environmental Protection Act has been designed to ensure that wastes are effectively managed from the point of their generation to where they are ultimately processed or disposed of. To provide this necessary control, the regulation includes definitions for different waste types and detailed requirements for a range of waste management activities. This guideline deals with one of the major responsibilities for the transportation of municipal waste, liquid industrial waste or hazardous waste: driver training.

This session will be for new certificates and renewals (those who have taken the course two years ago).
