The city has a garden inside it 🌱 

What is urban agriculture? It’s a quiet revolution happening in urban farms, community gardens, schoolyards, rooftops, and vacant lots. It’s the school garden where students taste tomatoes they grew themselves. It’s an allotment where neighbours become friends. It’s the urban farm feeding a block, one harvest at a time. 

Beyond the food, the co-benefits of urban agriculture are everywhere: cooler streets, cleaner air, stronger communities, and a little more hope in concrete places. It’s food security with roots. Climate resilience with leaves. Public health with soil under the nails. 

And it starts with us. 

The first module of Ecosource’s Urban Agriculture Leadership Lab kicks off this Thursday, October 8th. We are honoured to welcome our incredible facilitators: Karen Hutchinson from Albion Hills Community Farm, Yumnah Jafri from the University of Toronto, and Dr. Julian Hasford from Black Youth Farming Collective.

Today, we pause to honour the children who never returned home from residential schools, the Survivors, and their families and communities.

Orange Shirt Day began with Phyllis Webstad, a Northern Secwepemc (Shuswap) author and activist from the Stswecem'c Xgat'tem First Nation, whose new orange shirt was taken from her on her first day at residential school. Her story reminds us that Every Child Matters.

At Ecosource, we recognize that our work takes place on the traditional territory and treaty lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. Caring for the land and building a sustainable community requires more than acknowledgement. It calls on us to listen, learn, build respectful relationships, and take meaningful action toward reconciliation.

We encourage everyone to take time today to learn, reflect, support Indigenous-led organizations, and to wear orange in remembrance.

Today is the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste. Established by the United Nations in 2019, this day seeks to raise awareness and promote action to reduce food loss and waste.

This connects to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 12, which is responsible consumption and production. Within this goal is target 12.3, which includes halving global per capita food waste by 2030. According to the United Nations Environment Program, 13.2% of food is lost in the supply chains after harvest before retail globally, and an additional 19% is wasted at the retail, food service, and household level*.

Addressing food loss and waste connects deeply to our programs at Ecosource, including waste education, and local food programs. Reducing food loss and waste can improve food security and nutrition, reduce greenhouse gases and reduce pressure on natural resources such as land and water.

Check out this Broccoli Pesto Pasta Recipe from The Happy Foodie (thehappyfoodie.co.uk/recipes/max-la-mannas-broccoli-stem-pesto-pasta-salad) which uses broccoli stems (that usually go to waste) and leave a comment to share a tip for reducing food waste!

This free, eight-module professional development program is designed to help participants build the practical skills to operate urban agriculture programs and strengthen the impact of urban agriculture initiatives across Mississauga.

We’re thrilled to have an incredible group of facilitators lined up to share their knowledge and expertise through live, interactive learning sessions. On Thursday, October 8, a dynamic panel of experienced urban agriculture practitioners and academics will kick off the series with Module 1: Foundations in Urban Agriculture. Together, we will explore how urban agriculture contributes to food security, climate resilience, public health, and community development.
