Meet the 19th-century bishop who took "give to the poor" completely literally. 🕊️
On June 10th, Coptic Orthodox Christians around the world celebrate the feast of St. Anba Abraam (1829–1914), the beloved Bishop of Fayoum and Giza, known throughout Egypt as the "Friend of the Poor."
When he became bishop, he transformed his residence into a place of refuge for those in need. He was known for refusing food of a higher quality than what was served to the poorest person who came through his doors.
One story from his life captures his spirit perfectly.
A donor purchased beautiful new furniture for the bishop's residence. Shortly afterward, a poor woman came to him in tears because she could not afford furniture for her daughter's wedding.
Without hesitation, Anba Abraam handed her the keys and told her to take everything.
To him, people mattered more than possessions.
When he departed this world in 1914, he left behind no fortune and no estate. What he left was something far greater: a legacy of compassion, generosity, and unwavering love for those in need.
More than a century later, that legacy continues to inspire the work of Anba Abraam Charity. Every meal shared, every family supported, and every act of kindness is part of the seed he planted so many years ago.
His life reminds us that true wealth is not measured by what we keep, but by what we give.
