“I dream there will be no more victims of online sexual exploitation,” Barbie says. “I dream what happened to me will never happen to other children in our community.”

Today, Barbie is a student, a mother, and a leader, using her voice to help protect others and shape a different future.

On International Day of the Girl Child, her story is a powerful reminder of what becomes possible when girls are safe, supported and free to pursue their dreams.

Through protection, support and time, Barbie was able to heal and rebuild her life. Now, she refuses to let what happened define her future. Instead, she is using her voice to stand up for children and help build a world where they are safe.

Because every girl deserves the freedom to dream about her future, and the safety to pursue it.

BREAKING NEWS:
Three scam syndicate leaders have been sentenced to life in prison in the Philippines, after a court convicted them on human trafficking charges tied to a major scam hub. Each was also ordered to pay a fine of ₱2 million (approximately CA$45,500), marking a major step forward in accountability for trafficking-linked scam operations.

This victory matters because it reached the operators behind the exploitation, not just those on the surface. It also shows the power of survivor testimony: after more than 1,000 potential trafficking victims were freed from the Clark Sun Valley Hub in 2023, one survivor, using the name Marcus for safety, later helped identify supervisors and gave evidence that proved critical to the case.

His words say it best: “Testifying was my way of turning pain into purpose.” This is a powerful reminder that when survivors are protected, believed, and supported, justice is possible.

Suresh was only 15 years old when he was pulled out of school and forced into bonded labour at a brick kiln.

For six years, he and his family endured abuse, dangerous working conditions, and manipulated debt records that kept them trapped.

In 2019, an IJM local partner worked with authorities to rescue Suresh, his family, and 46 other labourers.

Today, Suresh serves in a police unit and advocates for other survivors seeking justice and freedom.

Chai* was struggling to support his family when he accepted what seemed like a promising job opportunity overseas.

Instead of finding legitimate work, he was trafficked into a scam compound and forced to spend long hours creating fake accounts and deceiving people online.

Refusing to work meant threats of violence, and Chai lived in constant fear as he witnessed others being abused.

Today, as a member of a survivor network supported by IJM, Chai shares his story to raise awareness about forced scamming, advocate for survivors' rights, and help protect others from the same deception he experienced.

Berta carried the pain of sexual violence in silence for years.

Everything began to change when she connected with an IJM partner organization that provided psychological care and support in her community.

Through counselling and a survivor support group, Berta found space to heal, and speak openly about her experiences.

Today, Berta serves as a trained community volunteer, helping women and children access protection and support.

She has become a trusted leader in her community, guiding families, supporting women, and helping protect children from violence.

Human trafficking is increasingly moving online, and law enforcement must be equipped to respond. Last March, IJM hosted its first trainings in Poland, bringing together over 40 Polish and Ukrainian officers to build skills in digital investigations, including social media intelligence and cryptocurrency analysis.

These tools do more than strengthen cases. They help uncover evidence in ways that reduce reliance on survivor testimony. It is an important step toward stronger systems, deeper collaboration, and better protection for people vulnerable to exploitation.
