At 10 years old, Daniel dreamed of going to school. Instead, he spent years doing hazardous work on Lake Volta, where the dream of an education felt farther away each day.

Then one day, everything changed.

“One day we went fishing on the lake, and the Ghana police service, together with IJM, came to our rescue. We did not know where they were taking us, so we were a bit afraid but, to my surprise, they took me to school.”

After years of labour on the lake, Daniel finally stepped into a classroom for the first time since his nursery school years.

And that was just the beginning of his story.

Vijayalakshmi and Nandini’s peace and freedom were not inevitable. They required a chain of people and systems functioning exactly as they should.

When faced with this question, Vijayalakshmi didn’t hesitate. Even though Nandini couldn’t yet see her freedom, her sister made a choice to reach out and not let go, for the sake of their freedom.

IJM’s model to reduce bonded labour is working.

An independent assessment found that “IJM’s partnership with the government in one community of South Asia has helped reduce the prevalence of bonded labour among manual labourers in the state from 29.9%.”

We estimate that this represents nearly 380,000 fewer people trapped in bonded labour.

Vijay was just 7 years old when a lender trapped his family in debt and forced him into bonded labour.

Taken far from home, he spent five years herding goats in isolation, enduring hunger, abuse, and life without freedom, education, or the care every child deserves.

But in 2025, everything changed. A rescue operation set Vijay free and cancelled his family's debt.

Today, he is back home with his family, and enrolled in school, finally free to be a child again.

The person behind a scam text may not be who you imagine.

Across parts of Southeast Asia, people are being deceived by fake job offers, trapped in compounds, and forced to scam strangers under threats of violence.

They are expected to meet targets. When they don’t, they may face punishment and abuse.

In Indonesia, IJM is working alongside survivors and local authorities to strengthen the justice system, hold criminals accountable, and help bring people to freedom.
