08/23/2026

Canada immigration update: A temporary public policy allowing certain Canadian permanent residents to sponsor previously undeclared family members is scheduled to expire on September 10, 2026.

With only about 3 weeks remaining, eligible sponsors should act quickly. The policy can cover an undeclared spouse, common-law or conjugal partner, or dependent child, but only sponsors who obtained permanent residence through specific qualifying pathways can use it.

IRCC must receive the application by September 10, 2026. The source also states there is currently no official confirmation of another extension.

After the policy ends, the lifetime sponsorship bar described in the article would apply again to affected undeclared family members.

Families affected by this policy should verify eligibility and required documents as soon as possible.

Work permits: Pakistan saw a major improvement, falling from 12 weeks to 7 weeks. Applications from Canada are currently estimated at 117 days, while India remains at 9 weeks.

πŸ”Ή Study permits: Nigeria increased from 8 to 9 weeks, while processing times for India, Pakistan, Canada, the U.S. and Philippines remained unchanged.

πŸ”Ή Visitor visas: Pakistan increased sharply from 61 to 75 days. Nigeria is at 76 days, India at 31 days, while Canada-based applications are estimated at 12 days.

πŸ”Ή Super Visas: U.S. applications increased from 123 to 138 days, while India remains at 56 days and Pakistan improved slightly to 176 days.

IRCC processed approximately 1.56 million temporary residence applications during the first six months of 2026, with more than 401,000 applications still pending at the end of June.

Remember: processing times are estimates, not guarantees or deadlines. Your actual timeline can vary depending on application complexity, additional document requests, background checks and IRCC workload.

IRCC is expected to update these processing estimates again around August 26, 2026.

Important LMIA update for Canadian employers!

IRCC has updated how the LMIA workforce cap is calculated for employers with fewer than 10 employees at a work location.

Previously, employers primarily looked at their existing workforce when determining the percentage of temporary foreign workers (TFWs) they could employ.

- Under the updated approach, the calculation can now include:
- TFWs with approved LMIAs who have not started working yet
- Vacant positions that are being advertised or recruited for TFWs
- Employers can no longer simply exclude these pending or open TFW positions from their workforce calculation.

This means employers planning multiple LMIA applications need to carefully review their current employees, approved positions and active TFW recruitment before submitting new applications.

For businesses relying on temporary foreign workers, this change could directly affect how many additional positions they can request through the LMIA process.

Stay informed before making your next hiring or LMIA decision.

Canadian Citizenship Certificate delays are growing!

IRCC finalized just 3,040 proof of citizenship applications in June, while the backlog jumped from 82,020 to 99,520 applications in just one month. By August, around 121,800 applicants were reportedly waiting for a decision.

With changing citizenship-by-descent rules and increased demand, applicants should make sure their documents are complete and understand their eligibility before applying.

BIG U.S. VISA UPDATE FOR APPLICANTS IN CANADA!

The U.S. Department of State has launched a paid expedited visa appointment pilot at the U.S. Embassy and consulates across Canada.

Eligible applicants applying for B-category visitor and business visas can pay an additional US$750 to access an earlier interview appointment potentially within 10 business days, subject to availability.

The regular MRV application fee is US$185, meaning the minimum cost for the expedited option is US$935 per applicant.

The program launched in Canada on August 18, 2026, and is currently scheduled to run until December 31, 2026.

The change could be significant for applicants facing extremely long regular appointment waits including approximately 24 months in Toronto, 16 months in Vancouver and 13.5 months in Ottawa.

Important: Paying the US$750 fee only provides access to an earlier interview. It does NOT guarantee visa approval, and the expedited fee is non-refundable even if the visa is refused, the appointment is cancelled or the applicant misses it.

If you're a Canadian permanent resident, international student, temporary worker or other eligible resident planning to apply for a U.S. visitor or business visa, make sure you understand the rules before paying the expedited fee.
