Luso Canadian Charitable Society is a non profit charitable organization as of August 3, 2003. We provide support services to adults with developmental and/or physical disabilities allowing much needed temporary relief for families/caregivers while providing a safe, nurturing environment and a sense of well-being. Since our organization does not receive any ongoing government funding, we heavily rely on the generosity of our community for support to continue fulfilling our commitment of providing quality programs and services to all persons with disabilities.

Our sincerest thanks to Samantha Cooper from Intact Insurance – Intact Assurance and Matt Civichino from ELM Insurance Brokers Inc. for taking time out of their busy schedules to visit Luso Peel and learn more about Luso’s future projects.

Matthew is a valued Director on Luso's Board & an amazing advocate for our participants and families. He nominated Luso to receive a donation as a part of Intact's Community Impact Program and we are very appreciative to have been selected as a recipient for the second time.

A generous donation of $2,500 was presented to our participants in support of the ongoing construction of Luso’s Residence, helping us meet our goal of providing permanent housing that meets the needs of our community.

Luso Hamilton participants are making a tremendous impact through their volunteer work with the Senior Support Navigator Program at St. Matthew's House!

By stocking food bank shelves, organizing donations, and preparing food hampers, they help support seniors and families facing food insecurity, housing challenges, and other barriers. Thanks to their dedication, the program is now able to prepare 10 times more food boxes on a weekly basis, ensuring that more community members receive the support they need.

Every box packed represents compassion, dignity, and hope. We are proud of our participants for being great community members!

Luso’s Respite Care, located at 2295 St Clair Ave W in Toronto, provides short-term, around the clock care offering caregivers a well-deserved break when necessary. Luso is proud to offer families the comfort and peace of mind of knowing that loved ones will receive the highest quality care in a safe, enjoyable, and fully-equipped environment.

Participants at Luso’s Respite Care spend their days enjoying the enriching programming Luso is known, including entertaining trips anywhere from movie theaters to McDonald’s, while their nights are spent comfortably in our eight bedroom, state of the art facility.

Participants at Luso Peel have had many new experiences on different outings this summer, visiting the Egyptian Museum, Space Explorers, and Dave & Buster’s!

At the Egyptian Museum, participants learned about Ancient Egypt through artifacts, exhibits, and a guided tour. At Space Explorers, they had the opportunity to use virtual reality devices to learn more about our galaxy, from past to present, and the galaxies far beyond. At Dave & Buster’s, they got to put their skills to the test with some great arcade games.

Community outings are an important part of Luso’s mission to promote social inclusion for those with developmental disabilities. They provide our participants with opportunities to socialize, develop independence, experience new activities, and actively participate in the community, which helps to reduce isolation, build confidence and create a meaningful sense of belonging.

Luso Hamilton participants are nurturing their collaboration skills with different food preparations!

They started by making coconut macaroons from scratch, including carefully measuring the ingredients, cracking & whisking the eggs, and doling them out into evenly sized portions. After the macaroons spent a few minutes in the oven, participants were rewarded with a sweet treat to show off their hard work. Afterwards, everyone helped to make smoothies with fresh fruit and juices, underscoring the importance of teamwork and healthy eating. What a wonderful way to demonstrate all the great things that come from us working together!

Peel participants had an incredible afternoon learning about and interacting with all different kinds of animals when Hands on Exotics Toronto visited the Centre! They learned about the life cycles and habits of different species, from bunnies to snakes to birds, and then had the opportunity to engage with them under the guidance of the facilitator.

The team at Hands On Exotics did a phenomenal job of tailoring the experience to our participants so everyone could take part. Thank you for bringing your knowledge, expertise, and of course, your amazing animals to Luso!

As always, there are lots of exciting happenings across our Luso Centres!

At Luso Toronto, participants enjoyed learning all about fire safety and firefighting from Toronto Fire Services! Firefighters came to Luso to give participants a tour of the firetruck, including all of its many capabilities. They also gave a demonstration on what steps to take in an emergency and everything they do to help keep our communities safe.

Thank you to Toronto Fire Services for the incredible educational experience!

In Hamilton, participants are squeezing every last bit out of summer with Outdoor Week! They took some time to craft their very own camping set up, including a canoe made with real wood & a campfire, trees, and even their very own banjo made with cardboard and craft paper.

They also experimented with colours to tie dye their own unique Luso t-shirts, just like you would at summer camp. What a great way to use their creative energy & keep the summer feeling alive as autumn approaches!

Luso Hamilton participants had an amazing time at a bread making workshop hosted by Paulo Ferreira, owner of OLA Bakery & Pastries

During the workshop, participants learned how to prepare dough using an electric mixer before putting their new skills into practice. They enjoyed kneading, shaping, and creating their very own Portuguese buns from scratch. It was an educational and delicious experience for everyone!

Ola Bakery has been a longtime supporter and sponsor of Luso, generously donating both time and resources to enrich the lives of our participants. We are immensely grateful for their continued generosity, community spirit, and commitment to empowering individuals with disabilities.

We look forward to continuing and expanding our partnership with Ola Bakery to create even more meaningful opportunities and experiences for our participants in the future.
