Sexual Violence Prevention Month creates space for important conversations about consent, exploitation, prevention, and support for survivors.

When awareness campaigns fade, the realities of sexual violence and exploitation remain.

Real prevention happens during the other 11 months of the year in homes, classrooms, workplaces, faith communities, sports teams, and everyday conversations.

Awareness starts the conversation. Action is what creates change.

This update highlights key developments in Canadian legislation and growing public concern around online safety and protection from sexual exploitation. From Bill C-14 advancing through Senate review, to new proposed measures addressing gaps in the Criminal Code, and increasing calls from Canadians for urgent action on online child sexual abuse, there is meaningful movement taking place across the country.

We’re also celebrating an important milestone as Bill S-209 moves forward to the House of Commons, continuing its path through the legislative process.

Together, these updates reflect a growing national focus on strengthening protections, closing legal gaps, and ensuring safety and accountability in both online and offline spaces.

Defend Dignity honours the quiet, everyday care that shapes how children learn, grow, and stay safe in the world.

From early childhood to young adulthood, guidance, protection, and understanding play a vital role in building confidence, awareness, and resilience. Across girlhood, these moments remind us of the importance of starting early with care, education, and support.

We recognize and appreciate every motherly figure and caregiver who shows up with patience, love, and commitment at every stage.

Today, May 5, we recognize the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People ( ), also known as .

This day is a time to honour the lives of those who have been stolen and those who remain missing. It is also a time to stand in solidarity with their families, communities, and loved ones in the ongoing fight for justice.

The crisis of in Canada is urgent and disproportionate. The Assembly of First Nations reports that Indigenous women account for 16% of all female homicide victims and 11% of missing women, despite Indigenous people making up only 4.3% of Canada’s population.

We must continue to listen, learn, and act.

Defend Dignity wants to highlight actions by youth on Parliament Hill this National Youth Week (May 1-May 7). According to a Toronto City News article, child advocates, parents, and youth gathered on Parliament Hill to urge the Canadian government to act on long-promised online harms legislation.

As digital spaces evolve, so do the risks. From social media and gaming platforms to AI chatbots, young people are increasingly exposed to exploitation, unsafe interactions, and abuse. Many are now speaking out—sharing how quickly these situations escalate and how unsafe they feel online.

This growing movement is not just about policy—it’s about ensuring real safeguards are in place.

Advocates are calling on leaders to advance legislation that reflects the realities children are facing today, not years ago.

At Defend Dignity, we believe this moment demands more than awareness—it requires decisive action. While protections lag behind, technology continues to move forward, leaving children at risk.

To the young people and families who have experienced harm online: we see you.
These conversations reflect what many are already living through. No child should have to navigate fear or exploitation in spaces meant for connection.

You can take action today. Visit our advocacy page to send a letter to your MP and call for stronger protections: https://defenddignity.ca/get-involved/

Earlier this month the Defend Dignity board and staff came together to refine our strategic plan for the next 2 years. It was an incredible time of sharing ideas, setting goals, reflecting on our progress, and laying out the path ahead with clear outcomes to guide us forward.

We also welcomed our new Executive Director, Jennifer Singh and a new board member, Sandy McAuley, two passionate individuals dedicated to fighting sexual exploitation in Canada and equipping our communities with the right tools.

We are excited for the opportunities and challenges ahead, and so grateful to our network of supporters and allies who we know are beside us in this work!
