This October, as we observe Disability Employment Awareness Month, we recognize the leadership, innovation, and resilience of people with disabilities and reflect on the ongoing work needed to create workplaces that are accessible, equitable, and free of barriers.
Disability is broad and diverse. It can be visible or invisible, physical or sensory, cognitive or developmental, and includes mental health conditions. According to Statistics Canada (2022), about 1 in 4 Canadians aged 15 and older, nearly 8 million people live with one or more disabilities. Despite progress, employment inequities remain. The employment rate for Canadians aged 25–64 with disabilities is 62%, compared to 78% for those without.
Policies like the Accessible Canada Act (2019) is an important step forward. These frameworks commit to making Canada barrier-free by 2040, requiring employers to identify and remove obstacles and actively consult with persons with disabilities.
Together, let's focus on creating workplaces where accessibility is standard, diversity is valued, and everyone can thrive with a true sense of belonging, opportunity, and respect. When barriers are removed, every person’s potential shines.
