This October, as we observe Disability Employment Awareness Month, we recognize the leadership, innovation, and resilience of people with disabilities and reflect on the ongoing work needed to create workplaces that are accessible, equitable, and free of barriers.

Disability is broad and diverse. It can be visible or invisible, physical or sensory, cognitive or developmental, and includes mental health conditions. According to Statistics Canada (2022), about 1 in 4 Canadians aged 15 and older, nearly 8 million people live with one or more disabilities. Despite progress, employment inequities remain. The employment rate for Canadians aged 25–64 with disabilities is 62%, compared to 78% for those without.

Policies like the Accessible Canada Act (2019) is an important step forward. These frameworks commit to making Canada barrier-free by 2040, requiring employers to identify and remove obstacles and actively consult with persons with disabilities.

Together, let's focus on creating workplaces where accessibility is standard, diversity is valued, and everyone can thrive with a true sense of belonging, opportunity, and respect. When barriers are removed, every person’s potential shines.

💜Today, we wear purple for Spirit Day, standing in support of LGBTQ+ youth and taking a visible stand against bullying and discrimination.

Spirit Day reminds us that allyship is action, it means showing up, speaking out, and creating safe spaces where everyone feels seen, valued, and loved for who they are.

According to GLAAD, LGBTQ+ youth are twice as likely to face bullying and harassment as their peers, yet having even one accepting adult in their life can reduce their risk of su***de by nearly 40%.

At RDR Peel, we believe that inclusion begins with compassion and courage. When we choose to support and uplift one another, we build communities rooted in safety and belonging.

Mental health thrives where community care exists 💚

This World Mental Health Day, we’re reminded that wellness isn’t built alone, it grows when communities listen, include, and uplift.

Together, let’s keep the conversation going and build spaces where everyone feels seen, supported, and valued.

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation- September 30; Every Child Matters!

A reminder lives in the stories of Indigenous children who never returned home and in the voices of Survivors who carry their memories forward. It tells of silenced children and of an attempt to erase identity, language, and spirit.

This day is a time to reflect, but it is equally a measure of our collective progress. The truth has been spoken; reconciliation now calls for promises to be kept. Moving forward requires steady, sustained action from all of us.

“When I see someone wear an orange shirt it’s like a little bit of justice for me, for Survivors in our lifetime. We can leave this earth knowing that the new generation is learning, and they care about what happened to us. We can leave knowing that the world is in good hands, they’re going to make sure it never happens again.” ~Phyllis Jack Webstad

As she said, it is a promise to learn, to remember, and to protect future generations from such harm.

Reconciliation is not for a single day, it’s a lifelong commitment to truth, justice, and healing. We stand in solidarity with Indigenous communities and commit to amplifying their voices, stories, and leadership.

This year marks 10 years since the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Final Report. We reflect on the Calls to Action and ask: How far have we come? And how much farther do we still need to go?

Gender Equality Week is a time to reflect on the progress made, and the work still ahead. It’s a call to celebrate the voices, leadership, and resilience of women and gender-diverse people, while recognizing that true equality means dismantling barriers and valuing their leadership at every level.

At RDR, we witness these changemakers every day, shaping communities, influencing policy, and driving equity. Their leadership is already transforming our systems. Guided by the belief that gender equity must be intersectional, inclusive, and rooted in truth. Through education, advocacy, and community care, we’re working to build a future where everyone belongs.

🥳To celebrate International Youth Day, we want to emphasize the importance of having youth centred in the work that we do. As professionals in the DEI space, we have learned that it is necessary that youth have a voice, given opportunities to become leaders and equip them with DEI knowledge so they can lead us to a more sustainable, equitable and inclusive community.

🤔💭Think about the youth in your life and how you can find ways to encourage them to get involved in the community, and become aware about the importance of DEI.

⬇️How will you empower the youth in your life? Let us know in the comments below!

🤗 We’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the team at Independent Living of Waterloo Region for inviting us to facilitate a two-day training on Countering Bias and Growing Inclusion. These interactive sessions aimed to deepen understanding of both conscious and unconscious bias, explore real-world scenarios, and introduce evidence-based strategies to reduce bias in service delivery and workplace relationships— leading to creating and ensuring a more inclusive culture in the organization.

🧠It was a pleasure to engage with staff in such a meaningful way, creating a safe and supportive space for open dialogue. Participants shared their lived experiences, asked important questions, and took part in the collective work of learning—and unlearning—biases that impact how we show up for each other.

💻If your organization is interested in training on countering bias or other DEI-related topics, we’d love to connect and support your journey toward greater equity and inclusion as a service provider or a community builder.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our discussion on mental health in racialized communities across Peel. 🤞🏽

Though it was a short session, we shared meaningful insights and engaged in important conversations. Our goal was not only to provide information but to equip participants with practical strategies to support their own mental health and the well-being of those around them—and to encourage everyone to take ownership of their mental wellness.
Mental health remains a stigmatized topic, particularly within racialized communities, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to bring this conversation forward. 🧘🏽‍♂️

We also want to highlight that there are many organizations in Peel offering mental health services that are culturally responsive and reflective of diverse lived experiences. ✅

If you’d like to see more sessions like this, drop a comment below and let us know which topics you’d like us to explore next! 🧠

🙏🏽 A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us for our Countering Bias, Advancing Inclusion training!

🎙️ The morning was filled with meaningful reflection, increased awareness, and powerful conversations about recognizing and addressing bias—both within ourselves and across our organizations.

🗣️ Participants had the opportunity to engage with one another, ask thoughtful questions, and leave with a deeper understanding of what bias is and how it influences our lives.

🧠 The truth is, we all carry biases. What matters is acknowledging them, reflecting on why they exist, and working to shift our perspective toward greater inclusivity.

💻 Once again, thank you for being part of the conversation! If you’d like to learn more about the work we do at RDR, feel free to reach out—we’d love to connect.

Thank you for joining us for yesterday’s Lunch & Learn on Mental Health: The Impact on Racialized Communities in Peel.

We appreciated the meaningful discussion around the unique challenges faced by racialized groups in accessing mental health support, and the importance of breaking down those barriers in our communities.

As a follow-up, we’re pleased to share a helpful resource we created: “ 6 Effective Ways to Improve Your Mental Health.” These practices are simple yet powerful tools to help you cope during stressful times and prioritize your well-being.

Let’s continue to support one another, share knowledge, and build stronger, healthier communities—together.
