St. Frances of Rome (1384–1440), the great mystic and patroness of Rome, received extraordinary visions of the afterlife. Guided personally by the Archangel Raphael, she was shown the realm of Purgatory, a place of merciful purification rather than despair.
In her vision, Purgatory was divided into three distinct provinces, arranged one beneath the other like three large regions of a kingdom of purification. Souls were placed according to the seriousness of their sins and the depth of purification still needed:
🔸 The Lowest Province: A vast realm of fierce, burning fire (though not dark like Hell). Here were souls who had committed grave mortal sins, confessed, and repented, but still carried heavy debts of attachment and reparation. Their suffering was the most intense.
🔸 The Intermediate Province: Reserved for those whose sins were less serious and who caused less damage through their faults. The purification here was significant but less severe than the lowest level.
🔸 The Upper Province: For souls with the lightest remaining stains—those closest to full readiness for Heaven.
St. Frances witnessed a beautiful, orderly hierarchy of expiation. Holy angels moved among the souls with compassion, assisting and encouraging them. Most touching of all, the Blessed Virgin Mary would descend in glory from time to time to personally lead fully purified souls into the joy of Paradise.
This vision reminds us that Purgatory is an act of God’s tender mercy — a land of hope, not desolation—preparing souls to enter Heaven perfectly holy.
As the crystal gate in her vision proclaimed:
“Behold the realm of true purgation, a land of hope not desolation.”
