Opportunity Looked Different in the 1970s

1972-1977

As conversations about inclusion grew, new opportunities were created for adults with developmental disabilities in Mission.

The Mission Workshop Association was formed in 1972, followed by the development of the Achievement Centre in 1973. These programs focused on employment, life skills, and community participation at a time when opportunities were often limited.

Families and advocates believed that people deserved more than care alone. They deserved opportunities to learn new skills, contribute, and be active members of their community.

Those early efforts helped shape the employment and community inclusion services MACL provides today.

Everyone has talents, strengths, and contributions worth recognizing.

The best conversations often happen around a table.

Thanks to a generous donation from the Mission Sunrise Rotary Club, residents at one of our staffed homes now have a beautiful new accessible picnic table where everyone can gather, connect, share stories, and enjoy time together outdoors.

Because when spaces are designed with inclusion in mind, everyone has the opportunity to participate, belong, and be part of the moment.

Inclusion Reached Local Schools

The Early 1970s

For more than a decade, Mission families advocated for educational opportunities for children who had previously been excluded from the school system.

A major milestone came in 1971 when students from Cade Barr School were accepted into the public school system. In the years that followed, more opportunities were created for students to learn within neighbourhood schools.

While inclusion has continued to evolve over the decades, these early changes reflected a growing belief that every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and be part of their community.

What began with six students in 1958 was helping create new possibilities for future generations.

What if preschool had a little more time for wonder? ✨

That's exactly the idea behind the new Extended Day Preschool at Kaleidoscope's 2nd Avenue location...

We're excited to announce that Kaleidoscope's 2nd Avenue location is introducing a new Extended Day Preschool Program this fall!

Designed for children ages 3-5, this unique program offers a longer preschool day, giving children more time to play, build friendships, explore their interests, &develop the confidence and independence that help prepare them for kindergarten. ✨

At Kaleidoscope, we believe children learn best when they have the time and space to be curious, creative, and fully engaged in play. Our Extended Day Preschool provides a rich, play-based learning experience led by the trusted and experienced team of Miss Tammy and Miss Lana.

Families can choose from:
📅 2 days per week
📅 3 days per week
📅 5 days per week

🕘 Extended Day Hours: 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM

🌺🌴 Aloha from Maple Community Inclusion! 🌴🌺

When the temperatures soared on one of the hottest days of the year, our Maple Community Inclusion team brought the tropics indoors for a Hawaiian-themed celebration!

With the air conditioning keeping everyone cool, people we support and staff alike embraced the spirit of the day with tropical attire, colourful leis, themed decorations, and plenty of fun.

The menu featured Hawaiian pizza, fresh veggies and dip, and POG juice (pineapple, orange, and guava) for a taste of the islands. There was even black watermelon on the menu, which, according to our tropical taste-testers, tastes just like regular watermelon! 🍉😄

Theme days like these are about so much more than costumes and food. They're an opportunity to connect, share experiences, create memories, and simply enjoy time together. They bring people together, encourage creativity, and add a little extra fun to everyday life.

A special thank you to our incredible Maple staff, whose enthusiasm, creativity, and dedication help turn ideas into experiences that people look forward to and remember. 💙

From tropical shirts and vacation vibes to laughter and great company, this Hawaiian Day was a wonderful reminder that sometimes the best adventures happen right at home.

Families Changed the Future

🕰️ Did You Know?

The community living movement wasn't created by governments.

It was created by families.

During the 1950s and 1960s, many parents found there were few local services or educational opportunities available for their children with developmental disabilities.

Instead of waiting for change, they became the change.

Across British Columbia, families organized classrooms, fundraising events, volunteer groups, and support networks. Here in Mission, those efforts grew into the organization that would eventually become MACL.

Their advocacy helped change how communities thought about disability—not as something that should separate people from community life, but as part of the diversity that strengthens our communities.

Every program MACL offers today can trace its roots back to families who believed their loved ones deserved more opportunities.

Sometimes the biggest changes begin with ordinary people asking an important question:

"How can we do better?"

⚾🌭 There’s something special about bringing people together.

This week, participants from MACL’s Oak, Maple, and Cedar Community Inclusion programs gathered at Matsqui Park for a month-end barbecue and baseball game. The day was filled with good food, friendly competition, plenty of laughter, and the opportunity to connect with friends from across our programs.

Whether they were on the field swinging a bat, cheering from the sidelines, or catching up over a hot dog and refreshments, everyone played a part in making the day memorable.

Events like these don't happen on their own. A special thank you to our incredible staff who dedicate so much time, energy, and care to creating opportunities for people to build friendships, try new things, and enjoy meaningful experiences in their community.

Community is built through moments like these — sharing a meal, supporting one another, and simply having fun together.

Thank you to everyone who helped make it such a fantastic day. 💙

💙 New Faces at Cedar 💙

One of the best parts of community is meeting new people.

Our Cedar Program recently welcomed H & M, and we're excited to have them join us as they begin getting involved in program activities, building new connections, and getting to know their peers and staff.

We're looking forward to the many conversations, laughs, adventures, and experiences that lie ahead.

🌿☀️ A Beautiful Day for a Walk ☀️🌿

Sometimes, the simplest outings can be the most enjoyable.

With comfortable temperatures, blue skies, and plenty of shade, these two adventurers took advantage of the beautiful day for a leisurely stroll through Centennial Park.

From peaceful pathways to quiet moments surrounded by nature, time spent outdoors is a wonderful opportunity to get some fresh air, enjoy good company, stay active, and connect with the community around us.

It's amazing what a little sunshine, a gentle walk, and a change of scenery can do for the soul. 💙
