🕯️ In a great many old Irish cottages the best bed in the house was not in a bedroom at all. It was built into the kitchen wall, an arm's length from the fire.

It is called the outshot, and it is exactly what the name says. The wall beside the hearth was pushed out to make a recess, and a bed was fitted into it with a curtain or a low rail across the front. In parts of the north and west it also carried the name cailleach (KAL-yukh), the old woman, which tells you plainly enough who slept in it. 🔥

The logic of it is the whole point. In a house with one fire, heat was the scarcest thing anybody owned. It was not distributed evenly and nobody pretended it was. It went, deliberately, to whoever was least able to do without it, and that was usually the oldest person under the roof. Everybody else slept further away and colder, and nobody argued about it. ❄️

There is a second thing in it that is easy to miss. The outshot put the oldest person in the middle of the house rather than out of the way of it. They slept beside the fire, which meant they slept beside the talk, the visitors, the cooking and the coming and going. They were not put in a back room to be quiet. 🫖

And when you know what to look for, the recesses are still there in ruins and in restored cottages, a strange square bite taken out of the wall beside every hearth. That is not a cupboard. That is where somebody's grandmother slept. ☘️
