We’re committed to fostering and encouraging civic pride. Communities in Bloom Canada (CiB) is a Canada-wide non-profit organization with international affiliations dedicated to recognizing community projects that involve heritage, environmental awareness, and beautification. Origins of Mission Communities in Bloom: In Mission BC, a local volunteer committee connected with CiB Canada was establis
hed in 2003, and with endorsement and support of the District of Mission, this community group was instrumental to Mission’s annual participation in CIB. Several community groups were already working in the aforementioned areas, and Mission Communities in Bloom developed and expanded their endeavors towards environmental awareness and stewardship, as well as community heritage, sustainability, and beautification. Our volunteers worked throughout most of the year to encourage others in a spirit of friendly cooperation. The group’s structure as a Society was revised in 2017 to support more effective expansion and reorganization as a distinct advisory committee connected with City Of Mission’s department of Parks, Recreation & Culture. Prior to COVID-19, MCIB Committee was active in many aspects of relevant community partnering, and indeed may reorganize with new volunteers and revised programs in the future. Generally speaking, our mandate is as follows: 1. Through community participation, to foster civic pride, environmental protection and beautification; 2) To improve the tidiness, appearance and visual appeal of neighbourhoods, parks, open spaces and streets; 3) To focus on environmental awareness; 4) To co-ordinate Showcase projects for future BC Communities in Bloom publications; 5) To be financially sustainable. As under the group’s original charter, community involvement will continue to be an integral aspect of Friends Of Communities in Bloom. In that respect, the Mission Communities In Bloom community group has not officially disbanded: Although still in hiatus, we uphold our CiB community-based intentions through this page to disseminate and share as “Friends Of Communities in Bloom” in support of common goals and purposes of various local and regional community groups and organizations. Examples of our mandate criteria for education, encouragement, community volunteering, collaboration and shared initiatives are many, relating to: Public and private horticulture, various student involvement programs (annually), streetscapes improvements, community gardens, support for beneficial flora and fauna (EG, native birds, mason bee and wild bee survival, wetlands and stream management initiatives); promotion of invasive plant control, beautification projects, and neighbourhood tidy-up initiatives; support for beneficial local outdoor activity opportunities, sustainable local tourism and events at and improvements to local parks; cultural heritage events and organizations, and other organized outdoor events within the District. We promote and attend local farmers’ markets, Earth Day events and many other relevant community events.
