Hey all, no pictures today but for those asking, we are so far ok other than lots of smoke at Seine River. The fires are about 60 miles away, so immediate worry for us is Lac La Croix. Skuya posted that those horses have been moved to a farm. In the States, there is a small fire in Ray which is where baby and mom are. It's very small right now and I'm watching sheriff's posts. The plan is to try to move mom and baby south if need be. I'll try to post an update if something changes.

And the promised pictures of Waabanishimo! He's shedding out to a very dark red. Fingers crossed we get to keep it. 3 months old, sassy and opinionated.

A quick post to link to a not too science-y video to explain Grey Raven's push to add some outcross to the bottlenecked genetic pool of the Ojibwe horse as a breed. Darcy and I will not be able to see this push through multiple generations given our ages, but we can take the first steps and hope that the outcross babies we produce, like Waabanishimo this year, will add some needed genetic ​diversity to the breed. Update to Waabanishimo. He is doing better and we are getting more confident that he will make it. He's growing and getting appropriately sassy for a young c**t. He has his father's sense of mischief and his mother's extreme dislike of bugs and love of brushing. He's still on multiple milk feedings a day and we are slowly switching him to solid food. Sorry I didn't grab new pictures but will do that soon and post!

Hi all quick post to update everyone. Waabanishimo is doing a bit better but is not out of the woods yet. He has not and is not going to nurse from mama Far although she remains attentive and at his side. I have divided his feedings into ten times a day, which means I'm not sleeping much and driving back and forth to the friend's farm where the mares are housed, twenty miles from my tiny office/house in International Falls. But it seems to be working slowly, and I feel like he is pulling ahead, and the scours (baby diarrhea) perhaps fading for now. He is bright and extremely active, and starting to have opinions about everything. Please keep him in your prayers and donations are also always welcome. Beyond Piper Equine's bill, his milk replacer is a hundred US dollars a 20 pound pail of powder, and he goes through one of those every six days. Biosponge is more than $200 a pack, and he's gone through 6 tubes to try to get his little gut more comfortable. Update on baby Waabanishimo. Baby is home! He is eating well although is not going to learn to suckle from mama, but is doing well from a pan. Mama Far is still carefully watching over him. He is a little cold since we are in the middle of yet another polar vortex here in northern Minnesota, at the farm where the mares live. So we have baby in a sweatshirt as well as his little foal coat to keep him warm. This baby means so much in terms of needed genetic material we hope for the Ojibwes going forward but also for his little self, already so curious and interested in his world. Update on baby! Waabanishimo has eaten something on his own for the first time today! He was able to bite - his own method for drinking; let us hope he figures out something more efficient! - 400cc of milk from a pan. Mama's milk but he hasn't quite figured out how to latch on. Seizures are still an issue and he's medicated now for that.
