WALK FOR WATER 2026

Help a Village Effort (H.A.V.E) brought its annual Walk for Water back to Haliburton County May 27.

Now in its 44th year, the organization raises awareness of, and funding for, clean water in impoverished villages in India. Since 1982, H.A.V.E has built artesian wells, averaging 15 to 25 per year.

The walk began at Highland Hills United Church, along the Minden Riverwalk, completing a two-and-a-half-kilometre journey that symbolizes the trek that women and children make daily in India to get clean drinking water for their families.

While the charity is based in Haliburton County, it has official chapters in Newfoundland and British Columbia

The B.C. walk saw about 45 people take part and a bagpiper started them off. Every year, they have a barbecue and lunch so everyone can sit and relax at the end when the walk is finished.

About $3,000 in cash and cheques was received there on the day. However, a lot of people donated through Canada Helps.

LIFE CHANGING - SPREAWS PROJECT 2024/2025

“My name is Thulasi, and I am 18 years old. I live in Godlapalli village and am currently studying in the 12th standard.

Before the installation of the new borewell, my family and I had to walk several kilometers every day to fetch water from a distant and often unsafe source.

This not only took a toll on our health but also affected my studies, as I spent hours each day just collecting water.

The installation of the borewell in our village has been a blessing. We now have easy access to clean and safe drinking water right within our community. This has drastically improved our quality of life.

I no longer have to miss school to fetch water, and I can focus on my education and my future goals.

The time and energy saved have allowed my family to engage in more productive activities, improving our overall well-being.

I am deeply grateful to the 'Clean Water for Bright
Futures' project and HELP A VILLAGE EFFORT (HAVE) Canada for bringing such a positive change to our lives.

This borewell has not just provided us with water; it has given us hope, health, and a brighter future." — Miss Thulasi, 18 years old, Godlapalli village.
