as Risk Management

Inclusive workplaces don’t take more risk — they manage it better.
Early support, clear processes, and flexibility reduce crises, grievances, and turnover.

Inclusion isn’t just values-driven. It’s risk-aware leadership.

Deloitte links inclusive culture to stronger organizational resilience and lower people-related risk (https://www.deloitte.com/ca/en/services/consulting/research/2023-global-human-capital-trends-report.html).

Episodic Needs ≠ Unreliable Workers

Episodic health needs don’t equal unreliable employees.

Capacity can fluctuate — just like with physical injuries, caregiving responsibilities, or life events.

With planning, communication, and flexibility, great employees stay great employees.

CAMH research shows that with appropriate supports, people with mental health challenges perform as well as their peers (https://www.camh.ca/en/camh-news-and-stories/new-study-shows-integrated-collaborative-care-helps-youth-access-supports-faster?).

Mental health literacy is a leadership skill — not a clinical one.

Managers don’t need to be therapists.

They need to recognize stress, respond early, and manage with empathy and clarity.

That’s not soft skill — that’s effective leadership.

The World Health Organization identifies manager capability as one of the strongest predictors of workplace mental health (https://lnkd.in/eA6iyhpk)

Isn’t the Goal, hashtag is!

Employers don’t need to know an employee’s diagnosis to support them effectively.

What matters is creating the right conditions for people to succeed:
✔️Clear expectations
✔️ Flexibility where possible
✔️ Open communication
✔️ Supportive management

hashtag are designed around what employees need to succeed—not what they need to disclose.

The question for employers isn’t “What does this employee have?”
It’s “What can we do to help this employee thrive?”

The Mental Health Commission of Canada highlights that supportive environments matter more than disclosure itself https://lnkd.in/gUyQDH8i)

Predictability Reduces Risk

Predictability at work reduces risk — for everyone.

Clear expectations, consistent routines, and transparent communication lower stress, reduce errors, and prevent conflict.

For employees managing anxiety or recovery, predictability isn’t a preference — it’s a performance stabilizer.

The American Psychological Association links unclear expectations directly to workplace stress and burnout (https://lnkd.in/gzPaWMcf).

STRIDE Employment Services is pleased to collaborate with Old Navy to host “This Way Onwards” — an engaging and informative event designed to create pathways to employment for our clients.

The session offered valuable insights into what it’s like to work in the retail sector, key skills needed to succeed, and included hands-on floor activities that brought learning to life. Our clients had the opportunity to connect, ask questions, and experience the workplace in a meaningful way.

“This Way Onwards” is a powerful initiative that supports individuals facing barriers to employment in accessing meaningful and sustainable opportunities. Stride is excited to partner with Old Navy for their partnership and commitment to inclusive hiring.

as

isn’t hand-holding — it’s .

Short-term, targeted support helps new employees learn faster, gain confidence, and become independent sooner — while reducing the load on supervisors.

Support upfront prevents problems later.

Research from the ILO and supported employment models (https://sirenetwork.ucsf.edu/tools-resources/resources/supported-employment-interventions-people-who-have-severe-mental-illness) consistently shows better job retention with early, structured support.
