National AccessAbility Week (May 31 – June 6, 2026) is an opportunity to celebrate the contributions, achievements, and leadership of persons with disabilities while recognizing the ongoing work needed to build a more accessible and inclusive Canada.

This year’s theme, “Building a Strong, Accessible Canada,” reminds us that accessibility is about more than removing barriers, it is about creating communities where everyone feels valued, welcomed, and has a true sense of belonging.

At QASL, we believe that inclusion happens when people are not only present in our communities but are actively connected, respected, and empowered to participate fully in all aspects of community life. Together, we can continue to address physical, social, and systemic barriers while fostering environments where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

As part of National AccessAbility Week, we encourage everyone to wear red on Red Shirt Day, Wednesday, June 3, to show support for accessibility, inclusion, and the rights of people with disabilities.

Building accessible communities means building stronger communities for everyone.

This week is National AccessAbility Week and Access Awareness Week Nova Scotia.

Ableism is a word many families are just starting to hear, even though you may have felt it for years in schools, services, and everyday life. For our first post this week, we’re highlighting one event that helps put words to those experiences and offers practical tools for change.

On Wednesday, June 3, 1:30–2:30 p.m. (Atlantic), the Nova Scotia Accessibility Directorate is hosting a free online “Understanding Ableism” webinar on Zoom. In this short session, you’ll hear what ableism means, how it shows up in everyday life, and simple ideas for making schools, services, workplaces, and communities more fair and welcoming.

As we continue reflecting on NSCLO’s recent ‘Resiliency Through Change’ conference, we want to take a moment to recognize Rebecca Maule for participation on the First Voice panel.

Alongside four other panellists, Rebecca spoke openly and honestly about some of the barriers people can face when trying to access supports and services. With courage, humour, and thoughtful insight, she shared her own experiences navigating systems while continuing to advocate for greater inclusion and opportunity.

Rebecca is a community volunteer, a paid employee at Penny Lane Enterprises and participates in QASL’s social programming (directed by the participants). She also hopes to one day live more independently in community with the right supports in place. Her willingness to stand in front of a large room and share her perspective helped bring awareness to the experiences of many people still facing barriers to support.

We are so proud of Rebecca’s advocacy, authenticity, and willingness to use her voice to help create more accessible and inclusive communities for everyone.

Reflecting on last week’s NSCLO Resiliency Through Change conference, we couldn’t be more proud of our very own Tanya Munroe, recipient of the Making A Difference Award for the Western Region.

This award recognizes staff members who help make their organizations stronger while contributing to communities that are truly inclusive for everyone — and Tanya embodies that in every way.

From the very beginning, she has approached her work with openness, humility, and a strong commitment to dignity, inclusion, and person-directed support.

Bringing positivity to every interaction, Tanya has a natural ability to make people feel welcome, valued, and included. She has a unique gift for bringing people together and creating a strong sense of belonging within our organization and community.

Congratulations, Tanya, on this well-deserved recognition. We are incredibly lucky to have you as part of our team, and we thank you for the difference you make every day ❤️

Happy Mother’s Day 💐
Today, we celebrate the many ways “mothering” shows up in our lives and communities. Mothers, grandmothers, stepmothers, foster moms, chosen family, mentors, and caregivers; thank you for the care, strength, and compassion you share every day. We recognize that mothers come in all forms, and each one plays a meaningful role in shaping lives and building stronger communities.

At QASL, we are especially grateful for the mothers within our organization and those connected to the people we support. Your patience, advocacy, and love make a lasting difference.
