For Vaagen, sustainable forest stewardship is at the core of all operations, and one key aspect of this is ensuring that our privately owned land is accessible to the local communities.

We are proud to hold a partnership with Salmo Valley Trail Society (SVTS), a local nonprofit committed to creating, enhancing, and preserving non-motorized sustainable recreational trails in the Salmo Valley.

Since 2018, Vaagen and SVTS have collaborated on multiple projects, introducing successful trail systems to the community.

“The recreational trails provide our community a chance to connect with nature, get outside and be active, as well as a place to gather and celebrate our passion for the outdoors,” noted Melisa Boardman, secretary of STVS.

Our Midway mill is proud to hold a partnership with Nk'Mip Desert Cultural Centre, a state-of-the-art interpretative centre with extensive indoor and outdoor exhibit galleries, education stations, two multimedia theatres, and various walking trails. The Nk’Mip Desert Cultural Centre is located on a 1,600-acre desert conservation area, considered the only desert in Canada.

As part of the outdoor displays, the Nk’Mip Desert Cultural Centre has over 1.5 km of desert walking trails that lead to a traditional village where visitors can peek inside a traditional Pit House (q̓ʷc̓iʔ).

Just recently, the Nk’Mip Desert Cultural Centre received a log donation from Vaagen, which were used to build the new q̓ʷc̓iʔ.

At Vaagen Fibre Canada, we are proud of all the team members who dedicate their time to sustainable forestry, helping us build strong partnerships in the community that lead to remarkable projects.

Today, we are amplifying the voice of Debbie Hachey, Log Scaler/Weighmaster at Vaagen Fibre Canada.

Born in the Fraser Canyon, B.C., Debbie's journey in forestry started at her family's sawmill. She has always had a passion for forestry and an eye for business, motivating her to become a BC Licensed Log Scaler & Weighmaster and start a career supporting mills within the Boundary Region.

New Wildfire Salvage Opportunity Agreements (WSOAs) will lead to faster action on harvesting areas damaged by wildfire, provide more timber for mills and set up faster reforestation through the leadership of First Nations.

“We have worked hard with Vaagen Fibre Canada to identify where harvesting should take place and where the land should be left to recover on its own. When we can identify and manage an entire landscape after a wildfire for water protection, such as wildlife corridors, surviving trees and shrubs, and culturally significant areas, immediately after a wildfire has burned, then we can restore the land and emphasize our management values,” said Vern Louie, forest manager, Osoyoos Indian Band.
