Communities Connecting for Children, the Registered Charity that owns Matheson Creek Camp, lost a treasured and integral member of our Board, our Camp Committee and an important connecting piece to the original camp that was designed and built almost thirty years ago. Heather Zaba passed away today from a sudden onset illness, at 69 years of age. Heather was on the Team that built the camp for Girl Guides, was part of the team that was sued by Girl Guides (who lost their case) in litigation that lasted three years, and when the property was able to be purchased by CCC, she was the first person called to come back and help rebuild, restore, and re-open the camp for the entire Community - a whole new generation. Her heart was in helping people, in dozens of ways. She delivered meals, she sold poppies, she financially supported many local and large charities. Heather knew groups of orchard workers from the Thornbury area whom she looked after with shopping and deliveries while they were in Canada, and she helped organize shipments from here of items purchased to send home to Jamaica. She has delivered newspapers for decades with her son, Cody. She baked boxes of candy and cookies for each home along her route at Christmas time. She had many illnesses, including cancer, in her short life, and never complained nor asked for help. When someone was ill, she was the first to call or come by. From a very well-known and community-service oriented family, Heather was proud but not vain, she did not seek attention but gave strong, steadfast support. And Heather supported our camp with all her heart and her might. In this picture, Heather is wearing a red vest in the second row. Her red hair turned grey a decade later, but otherwise she never really changed. Many people know Heather from a wide variety of places, and I'm sure those folks will feel the world is a little colder without her kindness and warmth. She will remain a huge part of our story, from beginning to end. A little girl born in the Yukon, raised in Angus, has touched many hearts and lives. Rest in Peace, Heather. You will be remembered.
