This weekend, we are headed back to Digby County and joining the Scallywags Crew to cleanup the shores near Ticken Cove! We will have bags and gloves and they will have hot dogs! πŸ”₯ 🌭 YUM!

Once again, the Municipality of Clare is providing a dumpster, so we will try our best to divert all the rope and plastics picked up during this event. We can't wait to see you!

It's another rainy day, but we are dreaming of summer β˜€οΈ

In the summer months, the Bay of Fundy stops spewing out mass amounts garbage, but the beaches start seeing a different kind of litter.

Rather than mostly seafood industry debris, we see urban debris like food wrappers, coffee cups, dog p**p bags, cans and sometimes even fireworks! It can be discouraging for those trying to keep up on what's washing ashore when beach visitors are adding to the mess!

So this summer: DON'T LEAVE A MONSTER MESS! Leave the beach better than you found it! Pack out what you pack in and maybe even pick up a few things that don't belong. Oh... and join us for a clean up!

A rainy day makes for a good day to be on the computer! I won't wish the it away because last year had a dought and woods ban. Let’s hope that doesn't happen again 😞

For me, the rain is great, because now I can continue to focus on our proposal for the Federal Ghost Gear Grant. We are asking for support to scale up our shoreline and island debris removal (and maybe even shared food at our group cleanups! HOT DOGS ANYONE?!) Fingers crossed 🀞

I am still hoping for more letters of support and partnerships. ❀️ It be good to show we are supported ❀️

I am including a picture of me on a big ol' washed ashore buoy just to make you smile! Luckily, this one isn't made with plastic and filled with styrofoam! So, it's one of my favorites! It sits at THE HAWK beach on Cape Sable Island.

This photo is from Yarmouth area down Chebogue point. The headland acts like an ocean comb and tends to catch so much debris. So much that you can't keep up on it and it needs constant maintenance! Lucky for us, William has been working hard at it.

Last week Team leaders Marianne and Lloyd headed out to help haul with an ATV. It's these types of community supports that are needed to keep up on what's washing ashore.

Thank you to everyone involved in this clean up!

WARNING: πŸ’© P**P POST AHEAD ⚠️

We are trying to get this πŸ’© identified... for science! It was found on the shorelines of during a clean up in Kings County at Morden Beach.

It's never good to find marine plastics integrated into animal f***s. I can't help but think of the poor animals that are having to deal with our garbage washing ashore and poisoning everything 😞 but I am glad there are so many of us out there trying to pick it up. ❀️

Although I would prefer to be out in the field, this is the FINAL WEEK to get our Federal Ghost Gear Fund Proposal ready.

Just because the funding was announced, doesn't guarantee we will get it. So I have been working hard, trying to secure partners, fishing captains, and figuring out areas that need our specialized help.

We are hoping to put in for 3 years of funding. If you have ways to support us, let me know. We are always looking for more help ❀️

My favorite way to make sure materials don't end up in the landfill is by repurposing! I am so thankful that we have such a great group of local artisans who support our clean ups ❀️

We go to lots of local farmers markets around Nova Scotia. Check our calendar of events to see what market we will be at next!

As someone who runs one of Nova Scotia's most active shoreline cleanup groups - I find this post highly offensive.

I'm glad to see there's so many fishers jumping on to say no, this is not the case. Times have changed, and we are a lot more responsible on our waters. There will always be bad apples in every group of people, but that does not mean that they are all rotten.

We do find a lot of fishing related gear washing ashore, but it's not all from here (thank you USA), there are so many ways to lose gear at sea, a lot of what we clean up is decades old AND fishing industry garbage doesn't just come from fishers... just ask us about lobster bands.

Pushing this narrative - it's exactly opposite of
what we need to do. Next time you're at the Barrington or Yarmouth dumps, go look at the GIANT piles of rope and traps there. Every single one of them is being disposed of responsibly and the piles just keep getting bigger.

Let's celebrate the fishers and partners within the seafood industry that are doing the right thing. I think... even I can start doing better at that. ❀️

2026 was named YEAR OF THE LOBSTER BAND! I made a guess that we would pick up 88,888 lobster bands over the entire year. Boy, was I wrong!

Since January 1st, we have picked up over ***356,000 LOBSTER BANDS*** from the shores of Nova Scotia. We have identified three main reasons there are SO many:

🌊 1: Folks still believe they are biodegradable, so they get washed off boats, wharves and floors. We know they take 10-15 years to break down. We are hoping you can help us spread the word and educate those who use them.

🌊 2: There are some on-land lobster facilities that don't have proper catchment systems and are releasing them from outflow pipes right into the ocean! It's not all of the facilities, but it doesn't take many to make a BIG mess.

🌊 3: Then there is what we call "legitimate or accidental loss" - This is when the lobster bands are lost out at sea, in rough weather and the winds are blowing hard. Safety comes first, so lobster bands will get washed overboard! Really, it's better than a fisher going overboard!

350,000 in 6 months is just too many. Hopefully this year we will see a decrease in the amount washing ashore.
