Friday facts: Canada’s North isn’t defended only by runways, radar stations and ships.

A big part of it is watched by Canadian Rangers who already live there, know the land, speak local languages, and can spot when something is off long before Ottawa ever could.

They’re part-time reservists, but in remote and coastal communities they can become the difference between a map claim and an actual Canadian presence.

That’s what makes the Rangers so interesting: sovereignty here isn’t just about flags, it’s about people who know the ice, the weather, the trails, and the communities by heart.

Throwback Thursday: Managing three different supersonic jet fleets at the same time was a massive logistical challenge that defined the peak of the Cold War for Canada.

It was an era when no single aircraft could meet all the varying demands of national air defence and NATO commitments.

The CF-101 Voodoo stood guard at home, ready to intercept Soviet bombers with unguided nuclear rockets that remained under American lock and key.

This massive interceptor was a two-seat brute that could scramble from a hangar in under a minute to protect the vast Canadian Arctic.

Across the Atlantic, the CF-104 Starfighter was tasked with a high-speed nuclear strike role that required pilots to fly at terrifying speeds just above the trees.

The "missile with a man in it" was the fastest jet to ever serve in the country and its unforgiving flight characteristics earned it a grim reputation in West Germany.

Meanwhile, the nimble CF-116 Freedom Fighter provided agile tactical support for ground troops and helped secure NATO’s northern flank in Norway.

These smaller jets were built right in Montreal and were prized for their ability to operate from short, rugged runways in the field.

It was a delicate balancing act of maintenance and training that lasted for sixteen years until the versatile CF-18 Hornet finally arrived to consolidate the fleet.

History seems to be repeating itself now as the government considers a new mixed fleet strategy to balance sovereignty and high-tech capability.

The current plan involves pairing the American F-35 stealth fighter with the Swedish Saab Gripen, which could be built domestically to boost our aerospace industry.

This "hi-lo" mix would allow the RCAF to maintain cutting-edge stealth for global missions while using the rugged Gripen for independent Arctic patrols.

Just like in the 1970s, the goal is to ensure that Canada isn't putting all its eggs in one basket when it comes to defending the largest coastline on Earth.
