Today, we presented the door prize from the Melville Model Train Show this past weekend, a Bachmann HO DCC starter set, to the winner, John Popowich in Yorkton. John was delighted to win the prize stating that this was the first time that he's ever won anything. As a youth John had a N scale layout. Winning the door prize has rekindled his interest in the hobby. John plans to spend his spare time during the winter working on his new layout.

One of my favorite artists of all time.

Today (July 22) marks the birthday of Scottish-born Canadian artist (1900–1994). He was not only praised for his abstracted landscape paintings and depictions of the army in the Second World War, but also served as Director of the National Gallery of Canada from 1960 to 1965.

The CARS OF VIA Heritage Fleet - Volume 1 Cars 100 to 517 by Richard Longpre with Marc Dufour has just come out. It is a highly detailed reference. The original Budd coaches (cars 100-129) for The Canadian alone have 28 pages dedicated to them with numerous builder's photographs, promotional photographs, car layout diagrams for the coach version and later the club car version as well as various sample consists showing where their position within The Canadian and other trains. The accompanying text reveals many fascinating aspects. This book is highly recommended to those seeking definitive details about VIA Rail passenger rolling stock. It currently retails for $124.95 and is available through Rapido Trains Inc. We eagerly await future volumes.
