New life and colour at Kersa! 🎨😊

The CCN Center in Kersa was recently filled with creativity as children, volunteers, and artists came together to paint the remaining six domes, bringing fresh colour and new life to the space.

This project was made possible thanks to the generous support of the Penner Family, whose contribution helped make this transformation possible.

Led by longtime volunteer artist Beza and a team of fellow artists, the children helped turn each dome into a unique piece of art. The project also included practical improvements to the site, including the creation of sheltered storage space for the donkey cart and water containers.

In the past few days, students had the chance to experience a small part of Ethiopia’s history firsthand.

For a special field trip, they traveled to the top of a mountain overlooking Addis Ababa, rising over 11,000 feet above sea level. There, they explored a historic site, including a place of worship carved directly into the stone more than 750 years ago, as well as a nearby Ethiopian Orthodox wooden church over 220 years old.

Students spent time discovering the site, taking in its history and craftsmanship, and sharing a treat with the Real Humanitarian team. For many, even the bus ride was something new and exciting.

The day ended back at their centers with a special meal and games, giving everyone time to relax and enjoy the experience together. In total, 170 children from several after school centers were part of this day!

Meet our Gulele Education Center! 🙌

In Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, our Gulele Education Center has been supporting children and youth since 2004.

Through our partnership with Yenega Tesfa Hitsanat, this center was established in the Gulele sub-city to provide after-school education and consistent support to children living with foster or extended families.

What began with 40 students has grown to support 50 children every day, from early primary school through graduation.

At this center, support goes beyond the classroom. Through our Child Centered Network model, students receive access to education support, meals, healthcare, and a safe environment where they can learn and grow, including a shaded outdoor area that was added last year, and these photos are from when it was built.

The impact also extends to families, helping create more stable and supportive conditions for each child.

During her most recent trip to Ethiopia, Deborah Northcott, Executive Director of Programs and Co-Founder of Real Humanitarian, spent time with students across our centers taking part in a variety of activities. From art projects and math games to English word and memory challenges, each moment was designed to make learning engaging and fun.

There was a great energy in every space, with students participating, laughing, and supporting one another along the way. It was one of those days where learning didn’t feel like learning at all, it simply flowed through play, creativity, and connection.

Moments like these are always special to witness! 💙

Get to know our Kality Center. 🙌

Akaki Kality is a semi-rural region located about 30 minutes south of Addis Ababa. Between 2003 and 2006, many families were relocated here after their homes in the city were demolished for new development. While housing was provided, high rent, limited infrastructure, and few job opportunities made daily life difficult, with restricted access to water and electricity.

In 2004, a small local charity called LiGA was formed by members of the community to run a kindergarten for children in the area.

When Real Humanitarian first visited that same year, children were learning under a blue tarp, using simple wooden structures as desks.

In 2006, in partnership with LiGA, we built a three-room school and began supporting educational programming. As community needs grew, so did the support. By 2013, the full Child Centered Network model was implemented, and Real Humanitarian took on the administration of the center.

Today, the center supports 70 children between the ages of 5 and 16, providing access to education, meals, healthcare, and a safe environment.

With support from Vulnerable Children Society, which covers operational costs, the center was named the Love and Hope Center.
