Wow!

Wow!

The actual angle of the Olympic Bobsled track.

Unlike the televised view where sleds appear to glide smoothly along the ice, the track itself is sharply banked to extreme angles, allowing athletes to maintain control at speeds that can exceed 90 miles per hour.

The steep banking is a product of physics: sleds rely on centripetal force to stay pressed against the ice as they round corners, and without these exaggerated walls, they would fly off the track. The angle varies from section to section, with some turns tilted nearly perpendicular to the ground.

Tracks like the one built for the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing are marvels of engineering, designed not only for speed but also for safety and fairness in competition. Standing inside one of these turns gives a new appreciation for the skill and bravery of Olympic bobsledders.
