Mayne Island Collective

Mayne Island Collective The Mayne Island Collective was formed by 15 charities and non-profits for an age-friendly community. Now is the time to move to action. That’s the idea.

We are pleased to introduce the Mayne Island Collective, a collaborative effort spearheaded by 10 island charities and non-profits (listed below). Through the last 10-15 years there have been multiple studies, town halls and reports about what would be priority improvements to address the challenges facing our island community. We know that through collaboration, our impact and ability to get thin

gs done are multiplied. Initially spearheaded by Mayne Island Assisted Living Society, we have successfully secured seed funding to help us as a collective make headway implementing what constitutes attributes of an age-friendly community. We aren’t reinventing the wheel. We will use the guidance of the Canadian government Age-Friendly Community program (https://bit.ly/44VOb2h). Further, we will work on the priorities you have already pointed out in the 250+ survey responses to the 2019 Designing the Future aspirations survey:
• Sustainable and Affordable Housing
• Environmental Sustainability and Resilience
• Climate Action and Adaptation
• Conservation and Environmental Awareness
• Community Engagement and Development
• Economic Opportunities and Employment
• Infrastructure and Accessibility
• Health and Wellness
• Cultural Awareness and Reconciliation
• Regulatory Adjustments, Planning & Funding

We want to prioritize concrete projects, plan & organize them, get funding and execute them. The funds will be used to pay for doing the leg work and grant writing. As an island that “runs on (exhausted) volunteers”, we will assemble a team of paid, dedicated people to do the heavy lifting and to see projects through. A word about funding: there are hundreds of grants and funding programs designed to help rural and remote communities like ours to get a semblance of the services available in larger communities. We just have to organize and claim these funds. This is what we are doing. Members of the Mayne Island Collective:
Mayne Island Agricultural Society, Mayne Island Assisted Living Society, Mayne Island Community Bus, Mayne Island Community Centre, Mayne Island Community Garden, Mayne Island Emergency Program, Mayne Island Food Bank, Mayne Island Housing Society, Mayne Island Library, Taking Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS), Mayne Island Chamber of Commerce.

How do land and financing come together to make housing possible?

This group will explore land access, shared ownership models, community investment, and pathways that preserve affordability over time. This is vital for creating more housing that is community orientated, and learning from the great work already going on in our community.

If you’re a landowner, involved in housing creation, or curious about long-term solutions, join the conversation!

What if some of the housing we need already exists?

This group will explore how we can create housing more quickly by making better use of what’s already here.

Topics include home sharing, converting unused space, and helping homeowners who want to help but don’t know where to start.

Housing isn’t only about building new. It’s also about making space for each other, and coming up with creative solutions using what we already have.

At our Community Builders Forum on November 26th we had a very interesting discussion about housing. Many ideas came up about how as a community we could make housing more affordable and accessible. We will continue that conversation this month, on Feb 23rd at 6:30pm, at the Montrose Local (thank you to Steffani McBurney for making that possible). You're invited if you are interested in that topic.
One of the concerns we talked about was dealing with the CRD Building Inspectors. Well, good news:
The Capital Regional District (CRD) is updating its Building Regulations Bylaw to better reflect current industry standards, improve clarity, and make the building inspection process more responsive. The updated Bylaw applies to the CRD’s three Electoral Areas that include Salt Spring Island, the Southern Gulf Islands, and the Juan de Fuca. The Bylaw will come into effect on March 1, 2026.

Your Community Builders Forum! FOCUS GROUPS!

Monday, January 26th, 6:30 PM at the Montrose Local.

At our upcoming Community Builders Forum: Land, Food & Water, we’re doing short updates… and then moving straight into focus group breakouts where you can help turn ideas into real next steps.

You’ll be able to choose one of four tables:

✅ Food Security (Food Bank + CSA growers, crop planning, surplus sharing)
✅ Bulk Compost + Soil Systems (shared composting, soil building, nutrient loops)
✅ Water Storage Solutions (rain capture, storage, practical resilience ideas)
✅ Knowledge + Labour Sharing (farm help, mentorship, skills transfer, workforce gaps)

Each group will leave with 1–3 action items, and real people attached to next steps - so momentum actually continues past the evening.

If you’ve been thinking “we need to do something,” this is one of those nights where we actually can.

Come join a table! The event is open to all. Bring your experience, your questions, and your love for this island. 💛
