We are bringing Pathways to Belonging training from BCRPA to Haida Gwaii in January 2027! This follows completion of facilitator training last Spring and delivery of our first entry session online in summer 2026.

"Pathways to Belonging is designed for professionals at all stages of their IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility) journey. It includes a six-module, self-paced program paired with facilitated practical sessions. This certification program deepens reflection, builds confidence, and reinforces IDEA-aligned practices across the recreation, parks and physical activity sector. Developed in partnership with the BC Alliance for Healthy Living and supported by the Province of British Columbia."

👥 It's aimed at people working or volunteering in BC’s recreation and parks sector, especially those involved in creating inclusive community spaces and services. That could include recreation staff, managers, programmers, instructors, board/commission members, volunteers, and other community recreation partners.

💵 There will be a cost for this training. It will be a hybrid of work at your own pace through the modules (ideally paid during your work hours) and in-person facilitated sessions with Zoom option. It is about $200-$250/person, and a group maximum of 20. See BCRPA website for details.

If interested, please e-mail [email protected] and we will add you to our contact list. Delivery of training will be prioritized to those in local government, recreation, and parks.

The Village of Port Clements’ application for the Mini PEAKS Legacy Project has advanced to Phase 2. Congratulations to the Village of Port Clements on their efforts to make this work happen.

We learned about the opportunity through the BC Recreation & Parks Association Symposiun this spring following our World Cup watch party & Vancouver Whitecaps FC panel and brought it back to communities as an opportunity to support soccer and further develop the Port Clements Community Park.

If successful, HG Rec, which runs a free after school program in the community for School District No. 50, would serve as the lead programming organization, working alongside the Village, Haida Gwaii Youth Soccer Association, adult soccer and other community partners.

A great example of how provincial recreation connections can lead to opportunities here at home. Good luck to the Village and thank you for investing time and effort in soccer on ⚽️

Some Sandspit fun today with a little golf crew to support Dennis' youth golf program at Hekate’s Retreat + The Clubhouse. Thanks Fran and Terry for leading the session today! A lot of first-timers from Daajing Giids keen for more golf! ⛳️ We had limited space and could only bring 4 kids with us today. Thanks Camryn and Claire for coming out one last time, a fun way to end the summer.

If you have time to take your kids to next week's session, you can catch the 8:30am to Alliford Bay, walk the spit or beach for an hour, and join youth golf at the golf course by 10am. Just be sure to contact Dennis in advance.

You can also save your ferry travel receipt and send to HG Rec at [email protected] to get reimbursed under the Moresby Island Travel Fund. ⛴️

We only have 22 registrants on the website so far for hlG̱a hlḵ’aats iihlangaa – Agate Man Triathlon – September 5, 2026 — and we know more of you are planning to come! ❤️

But we need you to register in advance so we can prepare race bags, get waivers signed, and make sure race day runs smoothly.

Please head to www.hgrec.com → Masset Programs and register yourself and/or your children by Monday before things hit the printer.

Early registration also helps keep this event sustainable for future years. Attendance numbers matter when we plan, fund, and report on programs like this that have t-shirts, prizes and a BBQ.

Thanks, folks! We’re looking forward to a great race day. 🏃‍♀️🚴‍♂️🏊

Haida Gwaii Recreation offers registered & drop-in programs, trainings & education courses, to serve everyone in the on-island community.

Celebrating 30 Years of Dolly Parton's Imagination Library!🎉

For 30 years, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library has been changing lives—one book, one child, one dream at a time. What started as a small-town promise in Tennessee has grown into a worldwide gift of literacy, inspiring a love of reading in over 270 million children in 5 countries.

Dolly’s vision was simple but powerful: every child deserves the joy of books, no matter where they come from. Today, because of her heart and generosity, and with the help of local program partners across the globe, millions of children have turned their first pages, discovered new worlds, and built brighter futures—one book at a time.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you, Dolly for showing us how to Dream More, Learn More, Care More and Be More. Here’s to 30 years—and many more—of inspiring a lifelong love of reading! 📚
