The Marmora scout leaders for many years in the 1960's, were Ernie Harvey and John (Jack) Coulthard. Jack would sometimes find jobs for the older scouts, that would allow them to make a bit of spending money. When the Marmora Public School closed the desks had to be removed. Having spent many years sitting at these desks, we were likely quite happy to smash them up so the metal could be recycled.

This is all that remains of the original Van Volkenburgh home in Belmont Township, at Vansickle. Nathan VanVolkenburgh settled in that area in the 1860's. Some of his wife's "Cole" family lived across the road in Hastings County. This is the only known photo of Nathan, taken when his daughter Margaret visited from Manitoba in 1885. Unfortunately, Margaret brought her daughter, Ethel May , age 3, with her. She died of "inflamation of the lungs" (likely pulmonary tuberculosis) Nathan's son, James, 21, also died from this disease at this time. Margaret was sent back to Ontario to escape the dangers from the Riel Rebellion.

MEMORIES OF A CROWE LAKE STORM.....One reader has written with memories of a fierce storm in the mid 70's. He writes: "At the same time frame there was the drowning of 3 men in a canoe. I remember several personal boats racing to the scene to save them men. We dove for as long as we could to no avail. It took two weeks for the OPP divers to retrieve all of the bodies."
