Today, the NCCM team was on Parliament Hill to respond to the latest Advisory from the Government of Canada warning Canadian businesses not to work with illegal Israeli settlements.

This Advisory is an important and positive step for Canada to further act against the expansion of illegal settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Companies like Costco and Loblaws have been put on notice: do not work or trade with illegal Israeli settlements, period.

There is no doubt that in the midst of a genocide, this should have happened years ago - and there is much more to do. Amongst other things, we urge Canada to go beyond an advisory and to implement a full ban on all illegal settlement goods.

So there is much to do, but today’s Advisory is a vital step in the right direction.

Global Affairs Canada and the Canadian Trade Commissioner Service issued a major Business Advisory today warning Canadian businesses to not work with illegal Israeli settlements.

We thank the Government for taking this important step in stating Canada’s stance on this issue.

We welcome this as a positive step that can be built upon to eventually ban all illegal settlement goods from our shelves.

Today’s Advisory is a clear message to companies like Costco and Loblaws: do not work with illegal Israeli settlements!

It is both sad and disgraceful to see organizations such as CIJA attack TMU President Dr. Mohamed Lachemi for not blindly adopting recommendations that would institutionalize the IHRA definition at the university.

Throughout his leadership, President Lachemi has consistently stood up for his students and spoken out against all forms of hate, including antisemitism and Islamophobia. There is, of course, always more work to be done to ensure that every member of the university community feels safe, respected and supported.

At the same time, there are legitimate reasons why universities may choose not to institutionalize a definition that critics argue could have implications for academic freedom and the ability to engage in legitimate criticism of the policies and actions of the State of Israel. Reasonable people can disagree on this important and complex question without resorting to personal attacks.

It is particularly troubling to see one of the relatively few racialized university presidents in Canada, with a longstanding record of promoting inclusion and opposing all forms of hate, subjected to such attacks simply for taking a principled institutional position and establishing a task force to ensure a thoughtful, open and meaningful debate on this critical issue.

Universities should be places where difficult and contested issues can be examined openly and rigorously. We should be able to have serious conversations about antisemitism, Islamophobia, academic freedom and the responsibilities of universities with respect, fairness and intellectual honesty—not through intimidation or personal attacks.

Last week, alongside the Ottawa Muslim Vote, we hosted Ottawa mayor candidate Niel Saravanamuttoo in a townhall where he committed to standing against Islamophobia, anti-Palestinian racism, acknowledged that what took place in Gaza was a genocide, and raising the Palestinian flag at Ottawa city hall.

Today, he reiterated this commitment on his platform. We welcome this principled stance from Niel, and his commitment to ensuring that the city of Ottawa will stand for all its residents.

Canada is right to reiterate that Canadian businesses will face legal and reputational consequences for their involvement in settlements. We thank the Prime Minister for reiterating this stance.

The E1 project planned for the West Bank is a major expansion of illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank that poses a lethal threat to any hopes of a future Palestinian state.

It is yet another major impediment to peace in the region posed by illegal settlements, all of which are violations of international law.

We urge Canada to act further in the face of this threat in the West Bank by placing a full ban on all goods in these settlements from Canadian shelves.

It is also time to place targeted sanctions on Netanyahu and his cabinet. There is no time to lose. Canada must further act to live up to our commitment to international law.

It is imperative that Canada stops Mohan Bhagwat, Chief Leader of the India-based Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), from entering the country this month.

Bhagwat is planning to visit Canada for the first time ever in an effort to clean up the RSS’s image.

But the RSS is a well documented fascist paramilitary group that wants to relegate all of India’s non-Hindu minorities into inferior status.

That’s why its members and affiliates have been involved in mob lynchings against countless Muslims, attacks of Christian celebrations, attacks on Sikh leaders, and many more disturbing incidents.

Mohan Bhagwat is the face of this ideology and group. He should be made to answer for such crimes, and be found inadmissible to Canada.

Today, the NCCM team joined Justice for All and other leaders across Canada on Parliament Hill to make it clear that Mohan Bhagwat, the Chief Leader of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) must not be admitted into Canada this month.

Bhagwat is planning a speaking tour later this month to rally RSS supporters in Canada around an ideology that violently relegates non-Hindus in India into second-class status.

Under Bhagwat’s leadership, the RSS network has been implicated in many cases of mass violence in India against Muslim, Sikhs, and other religious minorities. It is a fascist paramilitary group that poses a direct threat to peace.

Canada should not admit the Chief Leader of the RSS, whose agenda is to silence critics and to expand the RSS ideology.

We urge the federal government to ban Mohan Bhagwat and the RSS from Canada.

This week, NCCM Advisor Adam Ibrahim made an important statement at the first ever raising of the Palestinian flag in Windsor, Ontario. We were proud to join and support dedicated organizers who have been working on this file for months.

While symbolic, this is an important moment for Windsor’s Palestinian community, many of whom have lost family members during the genocide.

At a time of increasing anti-Palestinian racism at home, as well as genocidal violence and annexation abroad, we must further act to align Canadian policies with international law.

Over 260 civil society, human rights groups and community leaders have called on the Canadian government to deny RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat admissibility into Canada.

Bhagwat will reportedly visit Toronto on August 31 and September 1.

Inspired by N**i ideology, the RSS is an organization advancing the Hindutva ideology, which is hostile toward Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Dalits, and other minorities in India.

While foreign interference and violent activity continue to be documented in Canada by CSIS and the RCMP in connection to the BJP government in India (which is part of the broader RSS family), Bhagwat’s presence in Canada is totally unacceptable.
