Markham Toastmasters - Meeting Recap for September 22, 2026
Theme: The power of small wins
Word of the Day: Momentum

Another great meeting in the books! Yesterday’s theme was the power of small wins, how they snowball and build MOMENTUM 🚀.

Our jokemaster started off strong with a joke about a 7-Eleven worker with 7 kids 😂.

Rajan gave us a debrief of the current state of the Canadian economy 📊.

Andy delivered a talk about the (nonexistent) Mountain of Kong 🏔️, explaining through a clever metaphor how imaginary maps shaped by repeated critiques can create the illusion of truth.

Neruson closed us out with a reflection on personal growth, showing us how immersing yourself in just 4 hobbies can push you to improve.

We also ran Table Topics, our improv speaking exercise where members respond to random prompts with no time to prepare. It’s one of the best ways to build confidence thinking on your feet!

Markham Toastmasters - Meeting Recap for September 1, 2026

Theme: Back to School 🎒
Word of the Day: Studious

Remember that feeling on the first day of a new school year? New room, new faces, and a textbook full of stuff you don't know yet. But the lessons we look back on rarely come from the book, they come from the situations we never signed up for, and the people we met along the way.

📚 Case Studies (speeches):

Rajan told us about getting settling in Canada in the 1980s, and what it really takes to build a home somewhere new. From working as a financial consultant, to security guard shifts, to buying a church, and then running for Senate.

Hitesh shared a story about how he got scammed by a granny at a store checkout, teaching us to staying sharp even when everything seems harmless.

Ethan taught us the importance of problem solving when he missed his bus to Ottawa. It quickly turned into a masterclass about adapting on the fly, or in his case, booking an Uber across the city to catch another bus.

Imagine you’ve lost your ring. You check the nightstand, the kitchen counter, the bathroom sink, and all the familiar, comfortable spots. But what if it slipped into that dark crevice between the car seat and the console?

Here's what we learned:

Growth doesn't wait for the perfect moment.

Roy chaired the night right with exactly that energy.

The speeches proved it too:

🎓 Brian - “4 Lessons I Learned in University”
Brian shared four lessons. A few that hit hardest: time is the most valuable resource you own. So spend it wisely by doing and taking risks, not waiting for permission.

🧩 Hitesh - “Ding Bats”
Hitesh turned the room into a puzzle-solving challenge. He proved his point exactly: we learn best by doing, not watching. (As promised, the answers to the dingbat riddles above are “ambiguous” and “one in a million.”)

Cory Wong, our new club president, chaired the meeting with clarity and confidence. Drawing upon a recent family trip, he reminded us that the destination is only half the story, the real reward is the journey along the way. ✨

🎙️ Prepared Speeches:

💫 Melissa - "Everything You Need to Know"
Melissa delivered a moving, emotional speech on the lessons she wished she had learned at seven, sharing them through visionary, heartfelt communication that touched the whole room.

🎯 Roy - "Don't Know, Don't Care"
Roy tackled how to plan and deliver a speech on subjects you know nothing about, from using PowerPoint to YouTube, proving that preparation can beat expertise.

🤝 A Passing of the Torch:
One of the night's biggest moments was our executive swear-in ceremony, led by Hitesh Parmar. Congratulations to our incoming team:

Word of the Day: Attendant

Neepa chaired the evening with a timely reminder that presence is a practice. In a world full of pings, tabs, and to-do lists, she invited us to slow down, tune in, and be an attendant to the moment, to our words, and to each other. It was simple, grounding, and exactly what many of us needed.

✨ Prepared Speeches:

🏢 Lynn - "I Manage Buildings, Not People"
Lynn gave us a glimpse into her work, sharing what it is like to manage spaces and responsibilities, while also highlighting her goal of continuing to sharpen her public speaking skills.

🔁 Pooja - "Covid - A Turning Point"
Pooja reflected on her career journey and the ways COVID reshaped her path. It was an honest look at change, resilience, and what can emerge when life forces a pivot.

🐾 Roy Long - "It Would Have Been Better"
Roy shared a heartfelt story about one of his most valued mentors, man’s best friend. A moving reminder that some of life’s best lessons arrive with loyalty, patience, and a wagging tail.

What does it mean to truly be present?

At our May 19 Markham Toastmasters meeting, Neepa led us through the theme “Be Present,” reminding us to slow down, tune in, and be an attendant to the moment.

We heard three memorable speeches:

Lynn shared what it means to manage buildings, responsibilities, and growth.

Pooja reflected on how COVID became a turning point in her career journey.

Roy Long gave us a heartfelt reminder that some of life’s best mentors come with loyalty, patience, and a wagging tail.

Theme: Beauty and The Beast
Word of the Day: Metamorphosis

Roy chaired the evening and set the stage with a theme that reminded us how quickly first impressions can change when we perhaps give a bit more careful thought. Between playful callbacks to Beauty and The Beast and thoughtful reflections, the meeting highlighted the real magic of Toastmasters: growth that happens one brave step at a time. Certainly not kidnapping people and bending them to our will, well maybe a little. ✨

✨ Prepared Speeches:
🚗 Andy - "Who's Driving?"
In his Icebreaker, Andy gave us an introspective look at his journey and what led him to become a hypnotherapist, inviting us to reflect on who is really in the driver’s seat when life takes a turn.

🎭 Hitesh - "Meeting Roles"
Hitesh delivered a helpful refresher on meeting roles and made a strong case for why serving on the executive committee can be both fun and deeply rewarding.

📝 Sylvia - "Five C's of Writing a Compelling Speech"
Sylvia shared a practical, memorable framework for stronger speeches, walking us through character, conflict, content, cure, and change so we can build talks that truly connect.

👏 Hitesh was also presented with a well deserved Community Service Award.
