✨ Is your child preparing to join a group program, social skills group, recreational activity, or classroom setting?

Success in group environments often starts with foundational skills that aren't always explicitly taught.

Join us for our free virtual workshop, Skills for Successful Group Participation, where we'll explore the important readiness skills that help children and youth participate, learn, and thrive in group settings.

Topics include:
✅ Listening and following directions
✅ Tolerating transitions and changes in activities
✅ Learning through imitation
✅ Joining and participating with peers
✅ Managing group expectations and demands
✅ Strategies to help build these skills at home

This session is designed to help parents and caregivers better understand the skills that support successful group participation and learn practical ways to encourage them in everyday routines.

💡 Let's talk about Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA): What Does ABA Actually Look Like?

When many people hear "ABA therapy," they picture a child sitting at a table completing tasks.

In reality, ABA can happen during play, conversations, daily routines, community outings, and activities your child already enjoys.

A therapist may use toys, games, movement, or everyday experiences to teach skills such as communication, self-advocacy, emotional regulation, social interaction, or independence.

The goal isn't to change who your child is. The goal is to help them develop meaningful skills that support their success at home, school, and in the community.

Every child is different, which is why ABA programs are tailored to each child's strengths, needs, and goals. 💙

Looking for community supports, resources, and connections for your family?

Come visit the Kinark team at the Community Resource Day & Family Swap Event at EarlyON Aurora Child and Family Centre.

Families will have the opportunity to:
✅ Learn about local programs, services, and supports
✅ Connect with community organizations
✅ Pick up free resources and Kinark swag
✅ Participate in the Family Swap by bringing gently used clothing, toys, books, baby equipment, and other children's items to share

🚀 We're Launching SNAP®-A Program!

We’re excited to introduce SNAP®-A (Stop Now and Plan), a new pilot program for Autistic children and their caregivers.

Developed in partnership with Carleton University and Child Development Institute, this 13-week free program helps children build emotional regulation, self-control, and problem-solving skills through practical, hands-on learning.

If your child experiences challenging behaviours when frustrated, such as yelling, hitting, or kicking, SNAP®-A may be a good fit.

🍎 School lunches don't have to be a daily battle.

Many autistic children have sensory preferences that can affect what they eat. As the school year begins, focus on packing familiar foods that feel safe and predictable.

Try:
✅ Including at least one preferred food
✅ Practicing with lunch containers before school starts
✅ Keeping portions manageable
✅ Involving your child in lunch planning

Remember: a successful lunch is one your child will actually eat.

💡 Let's talk about ABA: This month, we're answering common questions families have about Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA).

One of the questions we aim to answer is: "Why does ABA work?"

ABA uses evidence-based teaching strategies to help children learn and practice skills in meaningful ways. By breaking larger goals into manageable steps, celebrating progress, and individualizing supports, ABA can help children build skills related to communication, daily living, social interactions, and independence.

The key? Every program is tailored to the unique strengths, interests, and goals of the child and family.
