📚 Introducing Kinark's Back-to-School Support Series: We're sharing tips throughout September to help autistic children, youth, and families navigate the transition back to school with confidence.

🎒 The classroom can be a lot to take in.

Bright lights, crowded hallways, loud classrooms, and unexpected noises can make school overwhelming for some autistic students.

Try working with your child's school team to identify sensory supports that may help, such as:
✅ Noise-reducing headphones
✅ Movement breaks
✅ Flexible seating options
✅ Access to a quiet space
✅ Visual schedules
✅ Fidget tools or sensory items

Small accommodations can make a big difference in helping students feel comfortable, focused, and ready to learn.

Sometimes progress looks like a big achievement.

Sometimes it looks like answering a question, trying something new, asking for help, or taking a small step outside a comfort zone.

These moments may seem small to others, but for children and families, they can represent hard work, perseverance, and growth.

What is a small win your family is celebrating right now? 💙

MYTH VS. FACT: Autism Edition 💙

❌ Myth: Autistic children don't want friends or social connections.

✅ Fact: Many autistic children and youth want meaningful friendships and relationships. They may simply communicate, socialize, or connect with others in ways that look different from what people expect.

When we challenge common misconceptions about autism, we help build more inclusive schools, communities, and spaces where every child feels understood and valued.

Autism is not one-size-fits-all. Every autistic person has their own strengths, preferences, communication style, and experiences.

By learning more and questioning outdated assumptions, we can create a more accepting world for autistic individuals and their families.

Growth often starts with one small skill.

A child learning to ask for help, communicate a need, follow a routine, or try something new isn't just developing a single skill. They're building confidence for future experiences.

Over time, these everyday skills can support greater independence at home, at school, and in the community.

Small steps. Meaningful progress. Endless possibilities. 💙

💙 Meet Helen, a Foundational Service Specialist at Kinark Autism Services.

Helen has had many memorable experiences throughout her time at Kinark, but one stands out above the rest: celebrating the small moments that make a big difference.

As a former Instructor Therapist, one of her favourite skills to support was teaching a child to use the toilet independently. While it may seem like an everyday task, Helen knows just how meaningful these milestones can be for children and families.

"Even if there were just dribbles in the toilet, there was a huge party coming out of the bathroom. Everybody was excited."

Those moments of progress, no matter how small, represented confidence, independence, and hard work. They were milestones worth celebrating.

Today, as a Foundational Service Specialist, Helen continues to support families on their autism journey, carrying with her the same passion for helping children reach meaningful goals and recognizing the victories that matter most.

At Kinark, we know that progress isn't always measured by big achievements. Sometimes it's the small steps that create the biggest impact. 💙

🌱 Does your child struggle when plans change unexpectedly?

Many children experience challenges with flexibility, especially when routines change, expectations shift, or situations don't go as planned.

In some cases, rigid thinking and behaviours may be linked to feelings of stress or anxiety.

Join us for Unstuck and Moving On: Understanding Rigidity and Promoting Flexibility, a free virtual session designed to help parents and caregivers better understand rigidity and learn practical strategies to support their child.

In this session, we'll explore:
✅ Common challenges related to rigid thinking and behaviour
✅ The connection between rigidity and anxiety
✅ Strategies to support your child during difficult moments
✅ Ways to encourage flexible thinking and problem-solving
