Canadian Spine Society

Canadian Spine Society We focus on maintaining strong partnerships with groups such as the Rick Hansen institute, Back Care Canada and most major Canadian universities.

The Canadian Spine Society is a collaborative organization of spine surgeons and health care professionals with a primary interest in advancing excellence in spine patient care, research and education. The Canadian Spine Society is a community of Canadian medical leaders comprised of orthopaedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, physiatrists, physiotherapists, chiropractors and other spine health care prof

essionals, all with the goal of promoting strong and healthy backs. With its diverse training and wide range of experience, the CSS membership remains focused on the improvement of spine research, educational needs and treatments in Canada. The CSS is helping to reduce the impact on the health care system by developing comprehensive information sharing tools such as the Canadian Spine Registry, which provides spine surgeons and researchers from across the country with access to current data on operative procedures and outcomes. These partnerships allow the CSS to build consensus among stakeholder groups through increased opportunities for collaboration, inter-organizational communication and programs that encourage continuous improvement among all spine care professionals.

The Question: Should people be able to pay for their spine surgery outside of publicly funded health care (in private or for-profit clinics)?

This debate is moderated by Dr. Charles Fisher and is sure to give you lots to think about.

On one side, Dr. Brian Day, argues that prohibiting private payment infringes on patient choice and leaves people suffering unnecessarily on long waitlists, asserting that a regulated private option could relieve pressure on the public system. On the other, Dr. Braden Manns, maintains that expanding private or for-profit surgical care risks creating a two-tier system that undermines equity, diverts scarce health-care workers, and ultimately weakens the public system Canadians rely on.

Their debate crystallizes the tension between access and equity, individual choice and collective responsibility, in the future of not only spine care, but health care in Canada. Don't miss it! Register today at cssconference.ca

To Fuse or Not to Fuse? The Sacro-Iliac Joint Takes Center Stage at CSS 2026 in Banff Alberta.

Few topics in spine surgery spark as much spirited discussion as the role of sacroiliac (SI) joint fusion - and this session, moderated by Dr. Christophe Murray, promises to be a highlight of the meeting.

Arguing for SI joint fusion is Dr. Robert Ravinsky from the University of South Carolina, who will make the case that a stable foundation matters. Expect data, biomechanics, clinical experience, and perhaps a characteristically American confidence that if you’re going to build big, you’d better reinforce the base.

Taking the opposing view is Dr. John Street from the University of British Columbia, who will cool things down north of the border by questioning whether SI joint fusion is always necessary—or sometimes excessive. With a thoughtful, evidence-driven approach (and a touch of Canadian restraint), Dr. Street will challenge assumptions, highlight potential downsides, and remind us that more surgery isn’t always better surgery.

This is one session you won’t want to miss. Register today at cssconference.ca
