Alouette River Management Society

Alouette River Management Society ARMS is an environmental non-profit organization committed to the protection & enhancement of the Alouette Watershed through stewardship & education.

The Alouette River Management Society (ARMS) is dedicated to proactively protecting and improving the Alouette Watershed and surrounding areas by creating a healthy environment connecting parks, trail systems, public centers and waterways. Volunteer supported, ARMS is involved in watershed inventory and monitoring, habitat restoration, public awareness and adopt-a-stream, liaising with all levels

of government and private land owners, and working towards the protection of aquatic habitat. ARMS offers environmental education programs including fieldtrips, classroom and habitat programs, and day camps. ARMS is currently advocating for a fish ladder over the Alouette Dam, connecting the river and lake after almost 90 years.

ARMS is incredibly grateful to recognize a generous $5,000 donation from ARMS Director Matt Kennedy in support of conservation, restoration, environmental education, and stewardship efforts within the Alouette watershed.

As we celebrate 33 years of community-led conservation, we are excited to launch a new fundraising goal:
🌿 100 monthly donors giving $33 a month 🌿

That works out to just $1.10 a day, less than the cost of a morning coffee, but together, this kind of reliable support can have a huge impact.

Monthly giving helps create more stable funding for ARMS, reducing the constant strain of seeking grant funding and allowing more energy to go directly into protecting and restoring local waterways, fish habitat, wildlife, and community programming.

As a registered charity, ARMS can also provide charitable tax receipts for eligible donations.

We hope Matt’s incredible generosity inspires others to join us in supporting the future of the watershed. Whether through monthly giving, a one-time donation, volunteering, or sharing our work, every contribution helps make a difference. πŸ’§πŸŸ

What a spring it’s been! 🌼This season, ARMS' Environmental Educator, Dan, delivered over 70 classroom workshops to students across the community! From salmon lifecycles and local wildlife to bees and butterflies, students have been getting hands-on with nature and learning how they can help protect the environment around them.

There’s nothing better than seeing young people get excited about conservation, ask amazing questions, and connect with the natural world in meaningful ways.

A huge thank you to all the schools, teachers, volunteers, and supporters who helped make another incredible season of environmental education possible! πŸ’š

πŸ“πŸŒΏ Meet the Thimbleberry! This fuzzy-leaved native plant is a familiar sight along trails, streambanks, and forests throughout British Columbia. Thimbleberry gets its name from its bright red berry, which is shaped just like a little sewing thimble!

But this plant does more than produce tasty berries! It also:
🐝 Supports pollinators with its large white flowers
🐦 Provides food for birds and wildlife
🌱 Helps stabilize soil along riparian areas and forest edges

Its soft leaves were also traditionally used by Indigenous Peoples for a variety of practical purposes, including as a natural tissue or bandage. Keep an eye out for thimbleberry while exploring this summer, especially in sunny openings and along waterways β˜€οΈ

🦟 It helps control insect populations
🌎 It’s considered an important indicator of ecosystem health

Have you ever spotted leaves rolled up like little green burritos in the forest?

This is likely the work of a leaf-rolling caterpillar, a clever little insect that uses silk to fold leaves into a protective shelter, just as you see in this red-osier dogwood!

Inside these rolled leaves, caterpillars can:
🏑 Hide from predators
🌿 Feed safely
πŸ¦‹ Prepare to transform into a moth

Even small insects like these play an important role in the ecosystem and are part of the incredible biodiversity found throughout the watershed. Next time you’re out exploring, take a closer look at the plants around you. There’s a whole hidden world living in the leaves πŸŒΏπŸ”
