Cleo's Story

Her story is a wild one. A homeless camp in our area was dismantled, and the people living there were moved along. Their belongings — including an old RV — were taken to the dump. A week later, one of the displaced people contacted authorities saying his cat had been inside the RV. When officials went to look, they assumed they were searching for a cat who hadn’t survived.

The RV had been sitting at the dump for seven days. They searched through the packed trailer and found nothing at first. After about 40 minutes, just as they were about to give up, they uncovered the bathroom door. Inside that tiny space, perched on the closed toilet seat, was Cleo.

She had survived seven days with no food, no water, no heat, and no ventilation and on top of that, she’s diabetic. It’s honestly unbelievable.

She’s since received the care she needed, and now she looks like a completely different cat. We have discovered that Cleo is a bit shy with other cats but with humans she’s all sweetness and cuddles.

If you like Cleo’s story and believe that our cats are mysterious, ancient, and running the whole sanctuary please donate to her team here https://petfundr.com/whiskersguild

Whenever we lose a SAINT, or a new resident joins us it’s always interesting to see the herd dynamic change and evolve.

When we lost Chewie we weren’t sure how Beanie was going to do without him as they were very bonded and had been together for over 10 years.

Safe to say Beanie’s found a new good buddy with Prince 💕

Fern (and her brothers Hemlock and Fig) were transferred a year ago from Delta Community Animal Shelter. These three are the best of friends! We tried valiantly to introduce them to some of our other bunny residents but Hemlock decided that wasn't for him. So they remain a trio. Which is completely fine. After all, this is their home and we respect their decision (when rabbits say no, it's a hard no, without much room for negotiation 😉)

A body is a body. We all age. Things decline. What used to work fine may not anymore, or may perform in alternative ways. Our pets are no different. Sweet Meah's vision and hearing have both declined in the 5 months she's been with us. Her cognitive ability is also somewhat different. She is 17, which is about equal to our 84 years. There are BOUND to be changes. Aging does not make anyone any less valuable. It just means we adapt to her needs instead of the other way around.

Turner Construction Company was on site this week for the 5th annual build day at SAINTS.

We watched in amazement as they constructed our “smalls” a predator proof outdoor run. This run will provide a ton of enrichment for our rabbits, guinea pigs, disabled roosters, pigeons and Doves, while giving our staff the peace of mind knowing they are safe from dangers on the other side of the fence. They also built us an enrichment garden box for our barn birds and made some toys for the smalls.

Shout out to Cooper Rentals for providing the equipment to make the day smoother for the Turner crew

Thank you so much Canadian Turner Construction Company !!!! You make such a difference for SAINTS Senior and special needs residents 👏👏👏

Charlie's Story

Charlie, like so many seniors who find their way to SAINTS, arrived because his person was hospitalized and wasn’t going to return home. At 16 years old, with significant health issues, he landed in a municipal shelter — a tough place for any senior, let alone one with complex medical needs.

His biggest challenge was Cushing’s disease. And while Cushing’s can be managed, it takes time, testing, medication adjustments, and patience. Unfortunately, like so many autoimmune conditions, Cushing’s makes it nearly impossible for a dog to find a new home. That’s where an end‑of‑life sanctuary like ours steps in. Because we aren’t working within the same adoption‑driven timelines as public shelters, we can give dogs like Charlie the months they need to stabilize, feel better, and have a chance at a better life.

Now… if only we could improve his sassy personality. Charlie is very particular about how he is handled, and he and Darwin are currently locked in a heated competition for “Biggest Pain in the Neck.” It’s a tight race.

If Charlie’s story made you smile, sigh, or shake your head in recognition, please consider supporting Team Biscuit Bureau — our dog team. They are extremely serious about their snacks and unserious about absolutely everything else.

We lost Greta today.
Greta became a Saint in 2022. She was a transfer from the SPCA Good Shepherd Barn. Greta had come into their care with 4 other pigs. Mama, Inky, Charles and Timbit were rehomed together but at her age, Greta needed specialized care. Greta quickly became our matriarch. She was sweet and loving and made us all smile every day. She was a dreamer (literally), often giving us scares with her sleep activities. Greta stood out. You just knew she was wise and kind hearted. She wasn't a pushover though, Greta made things go her way. She was about 16 years old and while she was doing well with her arthritis management, today she had different and serious pain. She was rushed into the clinic. An ultrasound and X-rays revealed the worst, a mass. Her discomfort level was too high. We made the only decision we could.
Greta passed peacefully.
She was loved. She had a home and a family.
We know that she was one of the lucky ones.
Really... we were the lucky ones.
Sorry all 😞

Leila and I have been volunteers at SAINTS since its very beginning in 2004, so it probably won’t surprise anyone that another SAINTS animal has found her way into our home and our hearts.

Zoey came to SAINTS toward the end of March. She arrived at just 42 pounds with a serious skin infection. She is now a healthy 61 pounds. Her people had wanted her euthanized, but thankfully the vet clinic convinced them to surrender her instead. They transferred her to SAINTS, and yesterday she officially came home with Leila and me. Leila filled out the adoption paperwork, so she’s ours completely now.

Losing Rayne last August was hard. We adopted him from SAINTS back in May 2017, and even with his Type 1 diabetes he was the most social dog. Leila could take him anywhere. Before that, she had lost Raleigh in the fall of 2021. He was a foster fail thanks to his “aggression” issues, but Leila “rehabilitated” him through the world of dog sports. After losing both boys, she really missed having a bright, active dog in her life. And 8 years of age Zoey still has a lot of pep and zip in her.

So when I told her about Zoey, she didn’t hesitate. She wanted to meet her right away. The first introduction… well, it did not go well. For either of them. But after several visits (with me tagging along), things slowly started to click. We even had a couple of visits at our home so she could meet our dogs and cats. The cats are still another story entirely.

Zoey absolutely loves Leila. She would love to love our dogs too, if they’d let her. That part will take time. She’s great with them; they’re just a bit wary of her. She’s very excited about the cats, and she seems perfectly fine with people.

The photos you’ll see are:
1. Zoey with Leila
2. Zoey meeting our nervous nellie, Violet
3. Zoey two minutes after meeting our niece
4. Riddick, the big goof, who is reluctant to meet her and ran inside
5. Violet running upstairs when she sees Zoey coming — and Zoey being very unsure about going up the stairs

PS: I wasn’t thrilled about taking on a fourth dog. King — our third dog, whom Zoey will never meet — isn’t good with dogs or people. Thankfully, our house is big enough that we can keep him separated without crating. Violet and Riddick are foster fails because of their huge fear issues, so I really thought I was bringing home another “crazy” dog. But I think Zoey is going to be our dog.

She feels like a good tribute to Rayne, who was our last normal dog.

If you believe in the work SAINTS does — the seniors, the special‑needs animals, the ones who need a soft landing — please consider donating to our Amazing Raise Campaign. https://petfundr.com/amazingraise2026

Zoey thanks you for donating to the place that literally saved her life.
