Last Call: Apply for the 2026 Dr. Emily Ellingsen Memorial Bursary, Deadline May 31

The deadline to apply for the 2026 Dr. Emily Ellingsen Memorial Bursary is this Sunday, May 31.
If you or someone you know is heading into post-secondary education and has ties to Cortes Island, don't let this opportunity slip by.
This year, three bursaries of $1,500 each are available: two from the Dr. Emily Ellingsen Memorial Bursary and one through the Cortes Island Academy.
You are eligible if you are:

Attending post-secondary education, and
Schooled on Cortes Island for at least 3 years, or
homeschooled on Cortes, or
a graduate of the Cortes Island Academy Program

These bursaries have supported Cortes students every year since 2010/2011, and they carry on her love for this community and her belief in the value of education.

Communitas Grants in Aid 2026

We’re launching another round of Community Granting, bringing together multiple streams of support:
- Cortes Foundation’s Communitas Fund $30,000
Supporting organizational capacity and long-term strength
- Strathcona Regional District Grants-in-Aid - $25,000
Local tax dollars supporting community projects

The Cortes Foundation is launching its first community granting round in support of capacity development using its Community Granting “Communitas” Fund. This fund was set up by a donor that believed in what can happen when community foundations are able to support the core operations and development of key organizations.

We will use these funds to leverage the SRD Grants-in-Aid funds that help strengthen the important work of our social profit sector.
The Foundation will work with community advisors and the granting committee to recommend projects to Director Mark Vonesch for this year’s Grant-in-Aid.
