🌽🐄 CORN FOR CATTLE? LET’S TAKE A LOOK! 🐄🌽

Join NPARA on September 3 at 10:00 AM for a Corn Variety Crop Field Tour!

Come check out a corn variety trial set up specifically with grazing in mind. We’ll take a look at how the different varieties are performing and what they could offer as a grazing option for cattle.

THEN → NOW 🌾 | Acid-Tolerant Wheat Trial

What a difference a month can make!

📸 July 15 → August 15

We’re currently evaluating acid-tolerant wheat varieties in partnership with the University of Alberta, looking at how different varieties perform in our soil conditions.

Why does that matter? Our soils are naturally acidic, and soil acidity can make it more challenging for some crops to access nutrients and establish strong, healthy growth.

That’s where variety selection can make a difference. 🌱

This trial is helping us identify wheat varieties that are better suited to acidic soil conditions — giving us more information to make practical decisions about what performs best on our farm.

We’ll keep watching these plots through the season and see what the final results tell us.

Better suited varieties. Better understanding of our soils. Better decisions for the future. 🌾

🌾 Not all crop varieties are created equal — and sometimes you have to look a little deeper than what you see in the field.

Soon, these plots will be heading into the combine, and that’s when we really start to see how they stack up. We’ll be looking at things like yield, seed size, protein and other important performance characteristics to help us understand how these varieties perform under our growing conditions.

This is exactly why research farms like NPARA are so important. 🌱 Year after year, we can grow different varieties side-by-side, collect the data, and build a better picture of what actually works here in the Peace Region — not just what looks good from the road.

And the best part? You don’t have to wait for the research results to come see what’s happening.

Our research plots are open to visitors, and we’d love for producers and anyone interested in agriculture to stop by the NPARA Research Farm and have a look for themselves. We have pea, wheat, barely, and canola variety trials on the farm this year for producers to check out.

Because sometimes the biggest differences are the ones you don’t see until the crops come off the field. 🌾

A Little Recap of Crop It Like It’s Hot 🔥

We kicked things off in a local producer’s field. Thank you, Tasha, for hosting us and creating a great trail through the field!

We had an amazing lineup of speakers:
🌱 Josefine Bartlett — Canola varieties & disease
🌱 Karen Skarberg — Crop staging
🌱 Lori Kinnee — Burnout & self-care
🌱 Curtis Snell (Thanks for rocking the orange bob) — RDAR’s OFCAF program
🌱 Dr. Sherri Strydhorst — RDAR’s PREP & DEMO programs and yield potential

A big thank you to Kozy Korner for lunch, the Berwyn Ag Society for donating the use of their hall, and Linden Tree Apothecary for the fun flower craft! 🌸

Thank you to all of our speakers, sponsors, hosts, and everyone who joined us and helped make the day such a success! 🫶
