Nellie McClung Museum

Nellie McClung Museum The Nellie McClung Museum is home to the only two of Nellie's residences that are open to the public in Canada. Come visit!

So much of what Nellie McClung achieved in her life began in and around Manitou, Manitoba. Here, Nellie taught, met Wesley McClung and raised four of their five children. In Manitou, she signed her first petition, penned her Canadian best sellers and established herself as a national speaker and champion of women’s rights. Nellie took her celebrity and her fight to Winnipeg in 1911 where, in 1916,

most Manitoba women became the first in Canada to win the right to vote. She later was part of the formidable Famous Five who won the Person's Case which legally declared all women as persons. In the early 1970’s, McClung House was saved from demolition and soon became a permanent fixture at Bill Wallcraft's Archibald Historical Museum, nine miles from Manitou. When the museum closed many decades later, Nellie's home and Hazel Cottage (where she boarded with the Hasselfield's as a 16 year old teacher) were gifted back to Manitou. Today, the Nellie McClung Heritage Site welcomes visitors from across the country to the only of Nellie McClung's homes in Canada that are open to the public, as a source of reflection and inspiration.

✨ The Hidden Attic was a Roaring Success! ✨

What an incredible evening. Or, as we like to say, what a roaring success thanks to all of you.

From the moment the doors opened, guests stepped back in time to experience the glamour, fashion, and stories of the 1920s. None of it would have been possible without the generosity, creativity, and support of so many people.

A heartfelt thank you to our sponsors, donors, volunteers, performers, partners, and supporters. We are also deeply grateful to everyone who purchased tickets, bid in the silent auction, made a donation, purchased merchandise, or helped spread the word. Every contribution helps us preserve and share the stories, artifacts, and legacy of Nellie McClung for future generations.

If you missed The Hidden Attic, or would like another opportunity to view this remarkable collection of original 1920s fashions, we invite you to visit the Nellie McClung Museum of Canada this July and August. The collection will be on display throughout the summer, giving visitors a chance to experience these extraordinary garments up close and discover the fascinating stories behind them.

Thank you for helping keep history alive. We look forward to welcoming you to the museum this summer.

🚨 SOLD OUT!

We are thrilled to share that The Hidden Attic is officially sold out!

What began as the discovery of a remarkable collection of authentic 1920s fashions hidden away in a Winnipeg attic has become an unforgettable evening celebrating history, fashion, and the stories of Manitoba women.

This event would not be possible without the generous support of our sponsors. Their commitment to preserving and sharing local history has helped bring this once-in-a-lifetime exhibit to life.

A heartfelt thank you to our Title Sponsor - Winnipeg Sea Bears and Exhibit Sponsor - Parkwest Projects.

We look forward to welcoming our guests on Thursday evening as we unlock the stories hidden within these extraordinary treasures.

Thank you for helping us make history come alive!

Behind the scenes - the making of the Hidden Attic exhibit. It started with a generous donation from vintage expert, Pieter Yongbloed, of a rare collection of 1920’s dresses discovered in a Winnipeg attic. He knew these were special when he pulled the first two out of a trunk. Who did they originally belong to and who protected them? Stay tuned for more!
