NS Adopt A Highway

NS Adopt A Highway The Nova Scotia Adopt-A-Highway program gives volunteer groups the opportunity to help beautify their communities by removing litter from roadsides.

Fill out our survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/AAHevaluation The Nova Scotia Adopt-A-Highway (AAH) program gives volunteers a chance to help their community by collecting litter and improving the appearance of roadsides, streets and interchange areas. We cooperate with several government departments, and work closely with the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal (TIR) local

depots, and Halifax Transportation and Public Works. Our volunteer groups receive garbage bags, flagging tape, safety vests, a Litter Cleanup Permit and assistance with garbage removal. The program started in 1992 and today we have over 170 groups participating across the province. We are a non-profit organization that is entirely funded by RRFB Nova Scotia.

Submitting your data after your clean-up is important! Your data allows us to understand not only where litter is accumulating, but also what litter items are being found most. With this information, we can come up with innovative litter reduction ideas in collaboration with community partners and municipal and provincial governments.

Also included in your Data Card is an opportunity to share feedback on your volunteer experience. This feedback is very important, as it leads to changes that we make to program processes and procedures.

To submit your data card, you can visit: www.nsadoptahighway.ca/submit-your-data-card-great-ns-pick-me-up/

Or send us an email at [email protected].

Do you have a plan to stay tick safe when picking up litter? Swipe for ways to reduce your risk of tick bites.

1. Wear the right clothing: close-toed shoes, long pants, long sleeves + bright colours - makes it easier to spot ticks.
2. Stay on trails and out of high grass when possible.
3. Apply Health Canada approved insect repellents to exposed skin + clothes.

For more information on tick safety, check out the Tick Safety page on the Province of Nova Scotia website: https://novascotia.ca/ticksafety/

This Saturday, May 4th, is Nova Scotia Litter Clean-up Day, as proclaimed by Tim Houston, Premier of Nova Scotia! We wanted to have an official day for celebrating the hard work of our volunteers. We also hope that this official proclamation will motivate other community members to get out and clean up their cherished local spaces.

If you are a volunteer with our programs, we encourage you to take time this Saturday to look back on what you have accomplished, and to extend your passion for cleaning up litter to educating others on the importance of sustainable waste management. If you do a clean-up on Saturday, be sure to post about it and tag us - you could win a prize!

Every day is Earth Day! It is important to carry forward Earth Day's environmental stewardship and community mindedness throughout the rest of the year. We hope that you all stay inspired, and that you capitalize on opportunities to protect and care for local ecosystems and natural spaces.

A huge thank you goes out to all of our volunteers that have completed clean-ups since our opening date. Swipe to see pictures of a few of our amazing volunteer groups.
