The RCMP Halifax Regional Detachment Community Action Response Team (CART) and the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officer Service recently completed proactive enforcement in Eastern Passage focused on off-highway vehicle (OHV) safety.
Several youths were observed operating OHVs on the trail system resulting in them being stopped and spoken to about their use of the trails and compliance with provincial regulations. Officers learned the youths had not completed the required safety training, which is mandated under Nova Scotia law.
Officers also engaged with parents and guardians to reinforce their responsibilities in ensuring youths are operating off-highway vehicles safely and in accordance with the law. Officers issued multiple summary offence tickets to the youths and adults and seized one OHV.
“While enforcement was a component of this initiative, education was equally as important,” says Sgt. Serge Landry, RCMP Halifax Regional Detachment CART. “We want everyone to understand and comply with the regulations and their responsibilities regarding OHV use for their safety, and that of their loved ones and others.”
The RCMP will continue its partnership with Department of Natural Resources throughout the summer and into the fall; the public can expect to see us on and off the trails and on waterways across Nova Scotia.
“Our goal is to encourage the public to enjoy Nova Scotia’s excellent trail networks and scenic waterways safely,” says Sgt. Landy. “Safety is a shared responsibility, and we all play a role in ensuring these spaces remain safe for everyone.”
