A consultant with Bioinventory Monitoring Group retrieved a memory card from one of their trail cameras at the Beagan Nature Reserve and found this amazing capture of a couple of Sandhill Cranes (Antigone canadensis). Much of their diet is plant material along with some insects and snails.

Conducting thorough ecological surveys on all new reserves is a vital first step for us. It guides our property management and helps us shape the individual 5-year management plans we create—and continuously update—for every single nature reserve. 🌿

We are getting closer to the closing date for the MapleCross Morris Nature Reserve Addition, and we have less than $20,000 left to raise!

Thank you to everyone who has supported this 83-acre property addition. We are incredibly close to covering the final purchase costs, and any additional support is deeply appreciated to help protect this land for generations to come.

We are very grateful to The Ontario Conservation Accelerator, which pledged $25,000 to make this expansion possible and challenged us to match their contribution! 🤝 We also want to thank the MapleCross Foundation, which acts as a champion for conservation and has helped us nearly close the gap on the purchase price.

Please help us secure this beautiful landscape and grow a reserve that already protects numerous species at risk.

Happy World Turtle Day! 🐢 Did you know Ontario is home to 8 different turtle species?

Amazingly, you can find 7 of them right in the Magnetawan River watershed: Snapping, Blanding’s, Map, Musk, Spotted, Painted, and Wood turtles!

While these amazing creatures can live long lives, every single one of them is currently "at risk" due to habitat loss and road traffic. 🚗⚠️ This time of year, they are on the move—please keep a close eye on the roads and help them cross safely!

What turtles have you seen? Upload your sightings at MWLT's iNaturalist project (https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/magnetawan-watershed-land-trust)

Talk about a growth spurt waiting to happen! Check out this incredible mama moose and her calf caught on one of our Still Creek Nature Reserve trail cameras. Keeping these ecological corridors safe means families like this have the room they need to grow.

With warmer days arriving, local wildlife activity is peaking. Please be extra mindful of turtles and snakes potentially on roadways.

Turtles and snakes may go on roads to cross to other areas, sun themselves on paved shoulders, or lay eggs in roadside sand and gravel. A quick scan ahead while driving can save a life!

Quick tip: If it's safe to help a turtle cross, always move them in the same direction they were already heading. Otherwise, they’ll just turn right back around!

One of our newest protected areas, the Magnetawan Wetland Nature Reserve, is currently undergoing a comprehensive ecological study conducted by the team at Sumac Environmental Consulting, this will guide our stewardship and conservation efforts for years to come.

Wetlands are powerhouse ecosystems, and as you can see from these photos, they are full of life! We’re especially excited about the blue-spotted salamander (Ambystoma laterale) found on-site.

This past winter, our property stewards deployed a new video-enabled trail camera on the MapleCross Morris Nature Reserve. The memory card was recently retrieved and it is exciting to see what was captured.

One of our first "stars" is this Red Fox. While photos tell us who is there, video shows us how they are out and about on the land.

Stay tuned as we have more videos to share!

No bugs? 🦟 Great! Unexpected hail? 🧊 Not so great—but our property stewards handled it like pros!

This past Sunday, our incredible volunteers headed out to the MapleCross Morris Nature Reserve to prep for the season. They spent the morning:
🐍 Checking on our snake boards for long-term monitoring.
📸 Servicing trail cameras to see what’s moving through the bush.

We are so grateful for our stewards who show up rain, shine, or hail!

Want to join the adventure?
We’re looking for more folks to join our Snake Monitoring Team! If you’re ready to contribute to local citizen science (and don't mind unexpected weather and bugs), we want to hear from you! DM us or click the link in our bio to volunteer. 🌲✨

Big news! We are expanding the MapleCross Morris Nature Reserve by an additional 83 acres, growing our total impact to nearly 300 acres of protected wilderness.

But we need your help to cross the finish line.

The Ontario Conservation Accelerator has pledged $25,000 in matching funds for this project! That means:
$25 becomes $50
$100 becomes $200

Your support provides vital connectivity for local wildlife and protects our forests forever.
