🍁 Happy Labour Day Weekend from MWLT! 🌿 Labour Day is a time to recognize the dedication and contributions of workers across Ontario and to enjoy a well-earned pause before the seasons begin to change.
Here in the Magnetawan Watershed, the long weekend offers many ways to slow down and reconnect with nature. Take a peaceful paddle, walk a local trail, watch for wildlife, enjoy the shoreline, or simply sit beneath the trees and appreciate the natural beauty surrounding us.
However you spend the weekend, please help care for the watershed by staying on designated trails, pack out everything you bring in, observe wildlife quietly and from a distance, follow local fire restrictions, practise campfire safety, boat responsibly and help prevent the spread of invasive species!
The lands and waters we enjoy are also supported by the ongoing work of landowners, volunteers, conservation organizations, and community members. At the Magnetawan Watershed Land Trust, we are grateful for everyone helping to protect these special places for future generations.
This Labour Day weekend, may you find time to rest, recharge, and appreciate the forests, lakes, wetlands, and wildlife that make the Magnetawan Watershed so remarkable.

🦅Today is International Vulture Awareness Day! Vultures may not always receive the appreciation they deserve, but these remarkable birds play an essential role in keeping ecosystems healthy.
Often called nature’s cleanup crew, vultures consume animal carcasses before dangerous diseases such as anthrax, rabies, and botulism can spread. In doing so, they help keep the environment clean, recycle nutrients into the earth, and maintain the natural balance of ecosystems.
Around the world, many vulture species are threatened by poisoning, habitat loss, and electrocution. International Vulture Awareness Day reminds us that protecting wildlife begins with protecting the land and habitats they need to survive.
At the Magnetawan Watershed Land Trust, we work to conserve private lands with natural, historical, scenic, and recreational value by helping sustain healthy, connected ecosystems for wildlife of every kind, including nature’s often overlooked scavengers.

🦌 Celebrating National Wildlife Day 🌿 Founded in 2005 by animal advocate Colleen Paige, National Wildlife Day raises awareness about endangered species, wildlife conservation, and the importance of preserving natural habitats. This important day is celebrated twice a year with the other date of February 22, honoring the birthday of late conservationist Steve Irwin.
At the Magnetawan Watershed Land Trust (MWLT), we know that protecting land also means protecting the wildlife that depends on it. By acquiring ecologically significant properties and accepting conservation easements, MWLT helps conserve natural spaces that provide wildlife with places to feed, shelter, migrate, and thrive for generations.

🎡 Two wonderful local fall fairs are happening this weekend! Fall fair season is here, bringing neighbours, families, farmers, makers, and visitors together to celebrate agriculture, creativity, rural traditions, and community spirit.

📍 Foley Fall Fair — Saturday, September 5
Presented by the Foley Agricultural Society, the Foley Fall Fair has been a community tradition since 1963. Its mission is to encourage awareness of agriculture and enrich the quality of life within the community. Admire baking, art, crafts, vegetables, flowers, maple syrup, and more! All of these entries are proudly entered by talented locals from Armour, Ryerson, and Burk’s Falls. Discover the true meaning of horsepower as massive draft horses compete to see which team can pull the greatest amount of weight and the light horse show is sure to entertain with both English and western classes for all ages.

📍 Armour, Ryerson & Burk’s Falls Agricultural Society Fall Fair — Monday, September 7
This annual fair celebrates agricultural, equestrian, and home-craft skills within the community. Enjoy thrilling competitions, delicious food, engaging exhibits, and plenty of entertainment for the whole family! The fair also celebrates the region’s strong equestrian community with a horse show offering classes for riders of all ages and experience levels.

Agriculture, community, and conservation are closely connected. Healthy soil, clean water, forests, wetlands, and responsibly cared-for land all help create a strong and resilient watershed. At the Magnetawan Watershed Land Trust, we’re proud to celebrate the people and organizations preserving our region’s agricultural traditions and rural heritage.

Thank you to everyone who joined us on the shores of Doe Lake at the Moss family cottage boathouse to commemorate one of our newest protected properties, Polly’s Roost Nature Reserve. During the gathering, we shared updates about conservation work underway in the area, celebrated the island’s permanent protection, and raised a toast to the generous donations that made it possible.

Misty mornings on the lake are one of Northern Ontario’s magical fall experiences! Check out this photo of Walleye Lake from last week! As we move closer to fall, the nights get cooler while the lake water remains relatively warm from the summer heat. This temperature difference causes moisture in the air to condense, creating beautiful fog that drifts across the water at sunrise. It’s a peaceful reminder of the changing seasons and the unique beauty of our region. Have you witnessed a foggy lake this fall? Share your photos or stories below!

It may be a day late, but here is this weeks post. Initially, it didn't seem like there was anything in the photo but you can see a black bear on the bottom left. We have seen evidence of black bears at Still Creek Nature Reserve but its the first time our trail camera has picked up a black bear.

A new property sign is up at the Beagan Nature Reserve! Thanks to our stewardship team members Brian and Kristina for getting it installed!!

One of our trail cameras captured, a female White-tailed Deer and her two baby fawns out for a morning stroll.

Did you know that fawns are usually born between May and June, so these two are likely 2-3 months old.
