Invasive Plant Spotlight | Periwinkle
Periwinkle is a popular garden ground cover, but it can spread far beyond where it is planted and overtake nearby natural areas. It has become established in many parts of Canada, where it forms dense mats that outcompete native wildflowers and reduce habitat for pollinators and other wildlife.

When choosing plants for your garden, avoid purchasing periwinkle and consider native alternatives instead.

Before you plant this spring… pause. 🌱

Just in case you missed out on the reel for this one, here’s an infographic.

Many common landscape plants are invasive and provide little benefit to wildlife. Native species support birds, pollinators, and healthy ecosystems. It’s so important to always plant with purpose.

Choose plants that give back. Make your backyard a haven for pollinators and wildlife.

These plants are native to decoration 8 USA.

For natives to your area by zipcode in US we recommend nwf.org/nativeplantfinder

Even though our lakes appear frozen and peaceful right now… ❄️
not all ice conditions are the same.

Bubblers can create open water and thin ice around docks and boathouses, which may pose risks to winter lake users. Some municipalities also regulate bubbler use, making it important to stay informed before installing one.

Aquatic plants aren’t just scenery and they aren’t “weeds” to be pulled. They filter nutrients, provide food and shelter, stabilize shorelines, and support a balanced ecosystem.
Learn the essential ecological roles these plants play in Chapter 1 of FOCA’s guide: https://foca.on.ca/aquatic-plants/.

A reminder….

Just a friendly reminder. Ice thickness on lakes across almost all of Michigan remain too thin to be walking on. We need at least 4" of thickness for it to be considered safe for humans, and at least 12-15" for vehicles.

Many areas have fast ice, or ice that is well below 4" thick. Please be very cautious. I know it's tempting to get out and fish or enjoy snowmobiling on frozen lakes, but it's just not ready yet for most areas.

When in doubt, take a measurement.

Total Great Lakes Ice Coverage as of today is 4.8%
