From the Patch to the Table: A Thanksgiving Pumpkin Centrepiece
Bring a little harvest colour to your Thanksgiving table! This simple centrepiece combines pumpkins, autumn leaves and a few natural touches. It’s an easy project to make together, using items from your garden, yard or seasonal decorations.

No carving or glue required
What you’ll need
* 1 small pumpkin and 2 mini pumpkins, in any colours you like, our friends Sheepy Hollow Pumpkin Patch have some beautiful pumpkins
* A low tray, platter or shallow basket
* A fabric scrap or tea towel to line the base
* A handful of clean, dry autumn leaves or reusable artificial leaves
* 3–5 pine cones
* A few dried wheat stems, optional
* 2 battery-operated candles, optional
* A damp cloth and scissors
Keep it affordable: Start with what you have at home. A serving platter works just as well as a decorative tray.
Step-by-step instructions
1. Prepare your materials
Wipe the pumpkins with a damp cloth and dry them thoroughly. Choose firm pumpkins without soft spots. Check any leaves and pine cones gathered outdoors for insects and loose dirt.
2. Set up your base
Place your tray in the centre of the table. Line it with a folded tea towel or fabric scrap, keeping the edges tucked inside. This helps protect the tray and adds a cosy touch.
3. Add a layer of leaves
Spread a loose layer of leaves across the base. Let a few show around the edges, but leave room for the pumpkins to sit securely.
4. Arrange the pumpkins
Place the largest pumpkin near the middle, slightly towards the back. Set the two mini pumpkins in front, one on either side, to form a loose triangle.
Turn them until you like the arrangement. Keep everything low enough for people to see one another across the table.
5. Fill the gaps
Tuck pine cones between the pumpkins. If using dried wheat, lay a few stems along the ends of the tray. Trim long stems so they stay clear of plates and place settings.
6. Add a warm glow
Place battery-operated candles in the remaining spaces, making sure they sit flat and securely. Use flameless candles around dry leaves, fabric and wheat.
7. Check the finished display
Sit down at the table to check the height and leave space for serving dishes. Remove a few decorations if the arrangement feels crowded.
Make it your own
For a family activity, invite everyone to write something they’re thankful for on a paper leaf and tuck it into the display.
Keep the centrepiece dry and away from heat. Replace any pumpkins that begin to soften, and pack away reusable decorations for next year.
