Last month our Terranauts spent two incredible days exploring marine science during our Junior Marine Biology Level III program at Similes Provincial Park!

Here’s what we got up to:
🎣 Learned about fish tagging and tracking.
🌊 Spent time fishing, exploring the shoreline, and discovering the awesome marine life found along the Bay of Fundy.
🎨 Learned about marine conservation in Nova Scotia and the Species at Risk Act before creating paintings
💧 Investigated freshwater ecosystems by testing water quality and exploring the organisms living in a local stream.
🦈 Became marine biologists by dissecting a chain pickerel,  examining its unique anatomy, recording observations, and comparing its adaptations for life in the ocean.
🐠 Finished the program by exploring the habitat needs of marine species and creating our own clay marine ecosystems.

A huge thank you to all of our amazing participants for making this overnight adventure so much fun! We loved exploring, learning, and camping with you, and we can’t wait to see you again at another Terranaut Club program! 💙

Another fall field trip coming up on September 26th! 🤿

Dive in and try scuba diving with us! We’ll learn all about what it’s like to dive in Nova Scotia and around the world while gaining real scuba skills and experience in a pool! We’ll explore the science behind scuba diving, what kind of aquatic biodiversity can be found in Nova Scotia, and hear from women in the scuba industry before trying scuba diving in a controlled setting under the supervision of scuba professionals.

We are excited to share our first fall field trip, coming up on September 19th! ⚙️

Join us for a hands-on exploration into environmental engineering at this day-long field trip! We’ll learn about renewable energy and real-world engineering challenges by building water filtration systems to clean dirty water, racing balloon cars we craft, making solar oven s’mores, and finishing with a wind turbine design challenge.

Earlier this month, our Terranauts participated in our first intermediate overnight program of the summer, Intermediate Marine Biology, hosted at the Morton Centre! Here’s what we got up to.

🐋 Participants went whale watching out of Lunenburg where we saw lots of seals and porpoises

🐟 Dissected chain pickerel with some awesome staff at Coastal Action, learning about invasive species and fish anatomy

⚙️ Built Baited Remote Underwater Viewing Systems (BRUVs) to observe the marine life that exists in the area

🪢 Learned how to tie the bowline knot, which is known as the king of knots

Last month, our Terranauts learned all about sea turtles and worked with the Canadian Sea Turtle Network at this awesome field trip! Here’s what we got up to:

💻 Participants created a map of a sea turtle’s movements by coding its location points

🐢 Visited the Canadian Sea Turtle Network where participants learned about local sea turtle species and went on a harbour safari, looking at intertidal creatures and picking up garbage

🎨 Got creative and made sea turtle keychains out of pony beads

This fun field trip is now open to girls and gender diverse youth ages 14-18! Read below for more details. ❤️‍🩹

Come explore the science that keeps you alive through a hands-on day all about the heart! We’ll learn about heart anatomy before dissecting pig hearts, using that information to develop real skills used by doctors, nurses, and other health care professionals. From measuring blood pressure before and after exercise, to listening to heart sounds with stethoscopes, to reading electrocardiograms of the heart’s electrical activity, it’ll be a full day of learning about heart health and health science careers!

Last week, our Junior Terranauts learned all about the Halifax Harbour and the creatures that live within it on our Harbour Health Field Trip, hosted in part at Dalhousie University! Here's what we got up to:

🐳 Taking a guided tour of the Beaty Centre for Marine Biodiversity

🌊Testing the water quality of the Halifax Harbour and learning about the contaminants affecting local marine life

🦀Exploring touch tanks with the help of Dr. Jen Frail-Gauthier from Dalhousie University

🪼Crafting our favourite marine species out of air-dry clay

Thank you so much to the wonderful staff of the Beaty Center of Marine Biodiversity (Beaty Marine Centre) for hosting us on this field trip, and to Dr. Jean Frail-Gauthier from Dalhousie University for helping us learn about local marine life using Dalhousie's touch tanks!
