Yesterday we joined forces with an incredible group of people to tackle a mind boggling, seemingly endless amount of lobster traps. We started at Hell’s Point, and eventually made our way to Kingsburg Beach. We removed as many traps as we possibly could, but there were a few that we unfortunately determined have become part of the ecosystem.

Yesterday I headed to Scots Bay for a cleanup organized by and Peggy! It was a rainy one but that didn’t stop us! The amount of lobster claw bands, as well as other micro plastics was unreal.

Today was the big day! Elaina Shay and I have been working together to clean up shoreline debris at Hirtles beach over the past month, and today we were able to get a small group of amazing people together to help us tackle the large trap pile we created, and to clean the marsh/shoreline around Moshers Pond.

In total, Elaina Shay and I, along with help from all of the amazing people today, have removed a total of 2745lbs (over 1 tonne) of shoreline debris from Hirtles Beach.

I want to give a HUGE thank you to everyone who came out and helped today, it’s amazing what a little determination can accomplish! In a way it’s sad to be finished at Hirtles Beach, but it’s exciting to be able to move onto a new location.

Ps. If you know of a shoreline/beach on the South Shore that needs to be cleaned, let us know!

We’ve begun tackling Hirtles Beach! We’ve been there a total of 3 times so far, and have been putting the lobster traps in a big pile so they are easier to remove. When restrictions loosen, we are hoping to get a bunch of people together who are willing to help us drag these out, so if you’re interested in helping out, let us know!!

Trip #1: ➡️ 69 lbs of small items removed from beach- We were there for a hike, but couldn’t resist picking up trash! This is when we noticed the huge amount of lobster traps that needed to be dealt with!

Trip #2: ➡️ 34 lbs of small items removed from beach - .life joined us to begin piling the traps we could get to.

Trip #3: ➡️48 lbs of small items removed from beach - this time .life and tackled the big traps that were buried! We brought a sled to help pull the cement ballasts to the big pile, and then garbage bags back to our cars!

Note - the above weights do not include any of the traps in the pile, or anything that we didn’t completely remove from the beach.

I’ve been trying to come up with new ways to reuse rope, and decided to knit a few coasters! They are a bit time consuming, but fun to make! I think I’ll do some embroidering with the rope as well :)
