Over these last few days, we have all been presented with a stark reminder of the inherent danger present in policing.

Two members of Melville's RCMP detachment seriously wounded in an armed standoff. A constable with the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal losing his life to stop a shooter before more lives were lost.

When we look at the raw numbers, law enforcement regularly fails to crack the top 10 of most dangerous jobs. It's not from a lack of danger, but rather from years of refining the ways in which they prepare for it.

Policing is unique in that the risk comes from persons willfully seeking to do harm. And for those who have taken the oath, it comes with a moral duty to confront that risk and the people who pose it.

Everytime Dad went out on patrol, there was always that chance that he may not come back. It was remote, but it was always there.

In times like this, more than ever, our branch wants to let our first responders know that they are not alone. Particularly for the members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, who are veterans in our nation. Our doors are open, and we will always be ready to render aid for those who have served.

In the here and now, and in the future. The Legion, our Legion, is here to help. The resources are there, for the injuries you can see and the ones you hold inside.

Whenever you need, whenever you're ready to talk.

- M.L. Valgardson, President
