Today, we proudly recognize Indigenous Language Day. Indigenous languages are vital threads of knowledge, culture, and deep connection to the land. By actively learning, sharing, and supporting these voices, we ensure they remain vibrant for the generations to come.

We invite you to take a moment today to learn a new word, listen to a traditional story, or reflect on why preserving these languages is so essential.

A look at some of our local languages:

Mi'kmaw: Spoken by the Mi'kmaq people, this language is prominent throughout Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island.

Wolastoqey (Maliseet): Spoken by the Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) people, this language is primarily rooted in the Saint John River Valley of New Brunswick.

Reflecting on the past is essential in building a future. On this International Day of Remembrance, we are honoring the millions who suffered under the Transatlantic Slave Trade. We acknowledge that this history is a vital step in confronting the systemic racism and prejudice that still exist in our world today. Let’s commit to justice, equality, and dignity for all.

Dear Community Members,

We are writing to confirm the closure of John Howard Society’s drop-in centre located in downtown Bridgewater. The Department of Opportunities and Social Development, which funds the drop-in centre, has notified us of the closure of drop-in services effective March 27, 2026, and are working collaboratively with us in exploring alternative ways to continue supporting community members in need.

The John Howard Society opened the drop-in centre in February 2024 in response to a pressing need identified by the Department of Opportunities and Social Development (formerly Community Services): the need to support individuals experiencing homelessness in our community, many of whom face addictions and mental health challenges.

Over the past two years, the drop-in centre has served as a daytime safe haven for individuals, offering showers and laundry facilities, clean clothing, coordinated medical and vaccination clinics, addiction and mental health support, nutritious meals, and a sense of community and care.

We recognize that the drop-in centre’s presence raised concerns for many community members in Bridgewater. The John Howard Society has taken those concerns seriously throughout and has actively collaborated on solutions, including hiring additional security personnel and building a gazebo for clients to use as an alternative to public spaces. We are grateful to those in the community who engaged with us constructively during this time.

We want to acknowledge the drop-in centre frontline staff, whose hard work and compassion supported community members in a time of need. We thank them for their dedication and service.

Our mission remains to support our clients in accessing and receiving the services they need to rebuild their lives. We are working in consultation with service providers and the municipality on next steps, with client safety as our top priority.

The John Howard Society will continue to provide supportive housing at Cedar Place and outreach supports throughout the community.

We remain steadfast in our commitment to making urgent, emerging, and long-term options clear as individuals navigate the complex systems, plan for a more stable future, and renew their outlook on themselves and the world.

Sincerely,
The John Howard Society

In Canada, March is officially recognized as Irish Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the profound impact the Irish diaspora has had on Canadian history, society, and culture.

Since the first Irish immigrants arrived centuries ago, they have helped build and shape the nation—from the railroads and canals to positions of leadership in government and the arts. Today, with over 4.5 million Canadians claiming Irish ancestry, that legacy remains vibrant and strong.

Throughout this month, we honor their resilience, their contributions to our communities, and the unique connection that exists between our two countries.

This February 14th, while many celebrate Valentine’s Day, the John Howard Society of Nova Scotia joins Canadians in observing Pink Triangle Day.
Established in 1979 by the Canadian Le***an and Gay Rights Coalition, this day commemorates the 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals persecuted by the N**i regime during WWII. It is a day to honor those we lost and to recognize the reclaiming of the pink triangle—once a symbol of oppression—as a powerful emblem of pride, resistance, and solidarity.
At the John Howard Society of Nova Scotia, we stand with the 2SLGBTQIA+ community to celebrate q***r resilience. We believe that understanding our history is vital to building a safer, more inclusive, and just province for everyone.
Today, we encourage you to reflect on the strength of those who fought before us and to reaffirm your commitment to equality and justice. 💖💪

At John Howard, we recognize that the story of Nova Scotia is inseparable from the strength and resilience of Black and African Nova Scotian people. From the historic endurance of Black Loyalists, Jamaican Maroons, and Black Refugees to the innovators of today, these communities are the backbone of our province. While we celebrate this heritage, we also acknowledge the ongoing fight against systemic anti-Black racism within our society and the justice system. This month serves as a call to action to amplify voices and commit to equity. Join us as we spotlight the 52 historic African Nova Scotian communities and the trailblazing women and gender-diverse leaders who continue to drive change.
