In Ontario, AHACs were first announced in 1995 in response to epidemic, systemic health disparities and inequities within the Aboriginal population across Ontario. They operate from a wholistic Aboriginal health framework which is often referred to by Aboriginal people as “the good life” or as restoring the “good mind”. The framework focuses on the restoration and rebalancing of the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing of Aboriginal people, families, communities and Nations, and understands “culture as treatment”.

Today, on National Indigenous Peoples Day, we recognize and celebrate the rich cultures, traditions, histories, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples across Turtle Island.

This day carries deep cultural and spiritual significance. It is an opportunity to reflect, learn, and honour the enduring strength, knowledge, and resilience of Indigenous Peoples, while celebrating our communities and the connections we have built together.

At an event at SOAHAC’s London site on June 9, 2026, MPP Steve Pinsonneault, MPP for Lambton-Kent-Middlesex, announced the Ontario government’s investment of $1,962,000 into Southwest Ontario Aboriginal Health Access Centre (SOAHAC) this year to connect over 2,200 people to primary care in Lambton-Kent-Middlesex and surrounding areas.

With this funding, SOAHAC will strengthen its capacity to deliver culturally grounded, wholistic health care and improve health equity and outcomes by reaching more Indigenous individuals and families who are not currently connected to a primary care provider. Primary care services and mobile outreach will be expanded across London-Middlesex, Waterloo Wellington, and Grey Bruce. This flexible model will serve urban Indigenous populations as well as rural, remote, and on-reserve communities that often face barriers to accessing consistent, culturally appropriate care.
