Historical handwriting is more than a means of recording words.

Every script embodies a particular way of organizing form, movement, rhythm, and visual space. Long before typography, graphic design, and digital interfaces, writing systems shaped how information was structured and understood.

The study of historical calligraphy offers more than beautiful letterforms. It provides insight into the visual logic of writing itself — how tools influence form, how scripts evolve, and how written marks become systems of communication.

Writing is one of humanity's oldest visual technologies. Understanding its structures opens new ways of seeing both historical artifacts and contemporary visual culture.

These questions form the foundation of our online course,
Historical Calligraphy: Writing as a Visual Language, a year-long guided practice exploring handwriting as a visual, cultural, and cognitive system.

We often think of handwriting as a personal skill or a historical curiosity.

Yet many of the visual systems that shape contemporary life — typography, graphic design, branding, publishing, interfaces, and information design — emerged from centuries of experimentation with written forms.

Historical calligraphy offers a way to study these structures directly. Beyond producing attractive lettering, it invites us to examine how scripts were constructed, how tools influence form, and how visual rhythm develops through movement, proportion, and repetition.

For me, the study of handwriting is not primarily about nostalgia. It is about understanding writing as a visual language and exploring the relationship between perception, culture, and design.

This is one of the ideas explored in our year-long online course,
Historical Calligraphy: Writing as a Visual Language.

A personal library is often a reflection of its owner: interests, research, travels, collections, and years of reading.

An ex libris offers a way to express that identity through the language of print, illustration, calligraphy, and symbolism.

Each of our ex libris projects is developed as an original artwork, drawing inspiration from the owner's collection, profession, interests, family history, or personal iconography. Designs may incorporate historical references, architecture, heraldic elements, typography, or imagery connected to the books themselves.

Created using traditional printmaking techniques, these bookplates become part of the ongoing history of a collection—linking books to the people who preserve, study, and enjoy them.

Books often require more than storage—they require protection designed specifically for their materials, condition, and use.

Our custom bindings, enclosures, and bookcases are developed for rare books, manuscripts, archival materials, artist books, and private collections. Some projects are intended for long-term preservation, others for exhibition, study, or display.

Each object presents its own challenges and possibilities. Historical context, materials, craftsmanship, and function all become part of the design process.
The following examples range from conservation bookcases created for Special Collections at Western

Libraries to miniature bindings and collectible book objects that explore the book as both container and artwork.

What do we do?

We work with books, manuscripts, artworks, historical objects, and collections—preserving them, studying them, and helping them remain accessible for future generations.

Our projects range from conservation and restoration to collection research, custom bindings, exhibition support, digitization, printmaking, and educational initiatives.

Whether working with a single artifact or an entire collection, we begin with the same question:

What can this object tell us about its history, materials, makers, and use?
From there, each project develops according to its own needs, with respect for both craftsmanship and cultural heritage.

DS Artistry Labs is a family-run non-profit organization dedicated to cultural heritage, craftsmanship, and education. Since 1997, we have worked with libraries, archives, museums, collectors, artists, and publishers, combining conservation, restoration, custom bookmaking, fine craftsmanship, research, and teaching. All proceeds support our educational and cultural initiatives.

Every object carries a story. Our role is to help ensure that it can continue to be studied, understood, and shared by future generations.

CAN A PROTECTIVE BOX BECOME AN INTERPRETATION OF A BOOK?

For many years, I was taught that a bookmaker should be two things at once: an artisan capable of mastering the technical craft, and an artist capable of interpreting a text.

This idea came back to me while creating a custom protective case for an 1856 edition of Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass. The project started as a practical conservation solution, but gradually became an exploration of how a binding—or in this case, a book-shaped case—might respond to the spirit of a literary work. Not by illustrating it, but by translating some of its rhythms, atmosphere, and movement into another medium.

The full story, along with photographs of the process and the finished piece, is now on my website:

https://www.journal.dsartistrylabs.com/home/learning-practice/whitmans-leaves-of-grass

I would love to know whether you see bookbinding primarily as a craft, a form of design, or an interpretive art in its own right.
