2026 Brain It On! brought together an incredible group of teams, supporters and community members for an evening of fun, friendly competition and fundraising in support of the Acquired Brain Injury Program at Parkwood. For Jeff Van Vliet, being part of a clinical trial at Parkwood Institute is about more than receiving care. It’s about helping researchers learn more about Alzheimer’s disease and helping shape what treatment could look like for future generations.

At 69, Jeff is still very active, playing hockey and golf. But his journey with Alzheimer’s began about 12 years ago when he noticed small changes in his memory, particularly at work.

He was diagnosed nine years ago and has been part of a clinical trial for the past four years, helping researchers test new approaches to treating the disease.
There is no cure for the disease today, but Jeff is hopeful that with clinical trials like these, maybe one day there will be.

Sept. 21 marks World Alzheimer’s Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness of alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

Clinical trials help researchers understand which treatments work, how well they work and how they may help slow the disease’s progression. And for Jeff, being part of this work is worth it.

“I might as well be here and help out,” he says.

He also has some advice.

“If you start noticing changes in your memory, talk to your doctor – don't wait,” he says as an early diagnosis can open new doors to treatment options.
