Today, we observe National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (NDTR), a day to honour survivors of the residential school system, those who never made it home, and the generations of communities that continue to be affected by the lasting impact of settler colonial violence.

NDTR began in 2013 by the Orange Shirt Society as Orange Shirt Day, commemorating the story of Phyllis Webstad, a survivor of the residential school system. On her first day at residential school, her new orange shirt, a gift from her grandmother, was stripped from her and replaced with the school uniform. The orange shirt has since become a symbol of solidarity and remembrance.

Although NDTR is observed once a year, the work for reconciliation must continue year-round as we continue to listen to, learn from, and honour Indigenous voices.

Swipe to see just a few examples of Indigenous focused and centered programming our YWHO team has been bringing to our space on a regular basis, from Truth & Reconciliation Commission Collages in our Craftivism group, to Medicine Workshops where we engaged with Indigenous knowledge and teachings about the four sacred medicines, to an Orange Shirt program.

Our YOU Made It Café rooftop garden is thriving, and so is our Common Ground program! 🌱

Throughout the summer, families at Joan's Place have been helping plant, grow, and harvest produce grown right on our rooftop, with the help of our gardener. From tomatoes to peppers to basil, they've been growing a variety of veggies and more to take home and cook with. 🫑🍅

Thanks to funding from the RBC Foundation, we've been able to fund more programming at Joan's Place like our Common Ground program, dedicated to strengthening practical skills, confidence, and community connection among residents.

We had a great time hosting our friends from The Home Depot for a barbeque on our YOU Made It Café rooftop recently!

As the Orange Door Project charity partner for all three London stores, we wanted to show our gratitude for all the work these teams do. Their hard work and dedication to the campaign helps create brighter futures for young people, and we're so thankful. 🧡

Over the past few months, members of our team have been working with four teams of Ivey Business School students, who came up with brilliant solutions to some of the challenges facing YOU as an organization.

We were honoured to attend the Ivey Digital Innovation Studio Awards to select the winning team earlier this month and present the award for their thoughtful and innovative solution design.

It was amazing to see the potential in all their creative solutions, and we're so glad to have been part of the process. Thank you to all the students who put so much time and effort into this project!
