Vesak Poya, celebrated on the full moon in May, is the most sacred day in Buddhism, marking the birth, enlightenment (Nirvana), and passing away (Parinirvana) of Gautama Buddha. It commemorates these three major milestones, emphasizing peace, compassion, and the practice of dharma, honored through meditation, alms-giving, and illuminating homes.

*4 Days Left โ€“ Please Support e-Petition e-6893 for Buddhist Heritage Month in Canada*
Dear Venerable Bhikkuni / Dear Friends,

An important national initiative for the Buddhist community across Canada.

We have only four days remaining โ€” until March 5, 2025, at 11:09 AM EST โ€” for Federal e-Petition e-6893, calling on Parliament to officially declare May as Buddhist Heritage Month in Canada.

To date, the petition has received over 1,700 signatures from Bhikkhus, Bhikkhunis, lay devotees and Canadians across all ten provinces.

Our goal is to reach a meaningful milestone of 2,555 signatures โ€” a number honouring the Buddhist Era โ€” before the petition closes.

Ottawa has officially proclaimed May 2026 as Buddhist Heritage Month โ€” a proud first step toward national recognition.

Ottawa to Declare May as Buddhist Heritage Month โ€“ Hiru News
During the recent Chinese New Year celebrations, Abbot Zhao Xu of Prajna Temple in Toronto graciously presented me with a traditional Chinese scroll,
(Ottawa to declare May as Buddhist Heritage Month - Hiru News - Srilanka's Number One News Portal, Most visited website in Sri Lanka) symbolizing unity and encouraging this national effort.
This initiative has also received international media coverage, including from Hiru News (Sri Lanka):

Our long-term vision is to support:
โ€ข Buddhist education across Canada
โ€ข The Bhikkhu and Bhikkhuni communities
โ€ข Funding allocations comparable to those supporting social harmony in other faith communities
โ€ข Nationwide recognition of Buddhist cultural heritage

I had the opportunity to offer a presentation at Hospice Waterloo Region on โ€œBuddhist End-of-Life Traditions.โ€

We discussed how Buddhism approaches death with mindfulness, compassion, chanting, and peaceful spiritual support. It was inspiring to see the interest and engagement from the participants as we explored ways to bring comfort and dignity to the end-of-life journey.
