Today is the start of Islamic History month! ☪🕋

This month, the London Heritage Council hopes to reflect on the achievements and contributions of the millions of Muslim people who call Canada their home. Whether locally in our community, or at the national level, Muslim Canadians have made profound and positive impacts across Canada.

For instance:
🕌Hilwie Jomha Hamdon, who helped organize support for the construction of Canada's first mosque in 1938
🎤Ahmad Balshe, better known as Belly, a Juno Award recipient and Grammy Nominee, known for his incredible rap career
📖Samra Habib, a photographer, writer and activist known for their photography and winning the "Canada Reads" competition in 2020

Thank you to the many Islamic members of our area who have made London such a tight-knit community, and great place to live.

Today we celebrate Women's History Month! 🎉

This October, we celebrate and venerate the great women who have shaped our community's history, and the many and various contributions that all women make in our society. It is said that women hold up half the sky, and right here in London we have seen this is true through many capable and successful Londoners including:

🎭Rachel McAdams, an academy award nominee and world-renowned actress
🥇Maggie Mac Neil, a gold-medalist Olympian swimmer
🚸Carol Johnston, founder of Canada's first children's museum: the London Children's Museum
📰Jane Bigelow, London Ontario's first female mayor

This year, the London Heritage Council wants to encourage the opportunity to reflect on the many crucial women in our community and take the time to thank the many women whose labour has been transformative and underappreciated.

The London Heritage Council commemorates the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Today, we mourn the despicable legacy of Residential Schools, and the pain that they inflicted on the indigenous peoples of Turtle Island.

Furthermore, we join millions of others today in honouring the survivors of residential schools, promoting awareness of the profound injustice that has affected and continues to affect indigenous people, and committing ourselves to reconciliation.

This year, the History Symposium and London Heritage Council are hosting the London Bicentennial History Symposium!

Hosted at the Old Courthouse, the Symposium will include talks about specific segments of London's history, booths and exhibits featuring key heritage organizations, and even historical performances. The day after the Symposium, participants can also attend tours at any of 4 heritage properties around the city!
